Categories will not work in my store instead subcategories are where my listings are going

My listings have usually up to 6 subcategories, e.g. sizes. When I create a listing I can only add to subcategories which means it looks like I have 1 product in 1 particular size. Been ongoing for 10 days now, multiple phone conversations but no results and only 2 products are linked to the Shop Now Button. I expected to quickly build an eBay store but this glitch has made it impossible

If a category has subcategories, then you cannot assign the main category to any items. Example:

Category:

Tshirts

Subcategories:

Tshirts -> Mens

Tshirts -> Womens

Tshirts -> Kids

If you list a tshirt you have to assign a subcategory (mens, womens, kids) to the listing and cannot assign the main category (tshirts).

If a main category (tshirts) doesn't have any subcategories, then you can assign the main category to your listings.

That's how the system is built - it's not a tech error.

If that's not the problem you're describing, then please provide more info and/or screenshots.

Thanks for replying....been away then blackouts. So you are saying I can't have a Category and put variations into subcategory. e.g Girls Dresses (Category 1) size 1, size 2, etc as subcategories. I have seen it on other stores where they have again say Girls dresses, click on it and it has a drop down with sizes listed, but I can't have it. Also my Shop Now button only connects to a couple of dresses, 1 of each size.  This is so confusing
