can anyone ID this old Japan large oversize cup shaped pot, stamped on bottom

would like to know if it has a name for pattern and age bracket, or what it was used for.  The colors are a grey ,never seen it before, thanks for any info on this.

It's Staffordshire pottery and Japan is the pattern name. Most likely, late 19th century. Here's a link to the thepotteries.org's list for the three possibilities for maker, H&W. http://www.thepotteries.org/mark/h/index.html Someone may have a more specific ID on the maker by that stamp. You should give dimensions, that'll help to ID purpose, etc.. Good luck.

Good job; here it is under Hancock, Whittington and Co: http://www.thepotteries.org/allpotters/501c.htm. My guess is sugar bowl, missing the lid. Sugar bowls were larger then, since it wasn't granulated yet.
