How to Describe this Glass/Chrome Item

I purchased two of these at an estate auction.  Looks like a stylized/abstract whale in heavy glass.  The "whale" is hollow.  Can anyone shed any light on what it is and its purpose?  Thanks in advance!

That’s it. Thanks!!  I should have remembered that the picture of the pair in the estate auction showed them “upright”. In my defense, that was a while ago.
