I got this message from my credit card.
Hi there,
Your $1,111.40 purchase at eBay O*08-06614-35132 on February 20, 2021, was declined because it would have put you over your $3,000.00 credit limit.
I didnt buy anything on ebay. What is this random charge?

It doesn't sound 'random', but ("purchase") rather specific. Thank goodness payment was declined. But, hmmm...

I would check with my CC company if I had not bought anything.

If you or anyone you know did not do this then I would suspect your Credit Card has been compromised.
You need to call you Credit Card Company as soon as possible and they should cancel your card and issue you a new one.
If there was a phone number attached to that email I would not use it. I would call the phone number on the Credit Card or you Credit Card Statement.
This could have been an attempt to get you to call a number to hijack your Credit Card.

I'd also change my eBay and PayPal password, and run a full virus scan on my devices.

First off, are you sure it's from your CC company, and not a phishing attempt?
Second, no one here can tell you what that charge is for. If the email is legitimate, it's either a glitch in your CC company's system, or someone used your card #. You should have already been on the phone asking them about it.

The message is most likely legitimate. I doubt the scammer would know the OP's cc limit, but it certainly sounds like the cc has been compromised.
Calling the # on the back of the cc would be a good start.

Did the message actually start with "Hi there," ?
Contact the bank and report it as a possible breach. If they confirm it was attempted, and it wasn't you, I would even cancel the card immediately to get a new one with a new number.
Don't click on links in emails either.

Well the FIRST thing you need to do is contact your CCC. Sounds like you have someone that got your CC number. Might be a VERY good idea to have a conversation with your CCC to see the best approach to your issue. This isn't an Ebay issue. Someone may have your CC number so more charges could be coming. Make sure you protect yourself by calling your CCC.

Good point.
I don't think I've ever had any messages/emails etc from my bank that start with Hi there.

I've gotten spoof emails from credit card companies that looked perfectly legit. Just call your card company and have the card replaced with a new number. They'll be more than happy to oblige.
They'll also be able to delete any unauthorized charges.

P.S. @nickelpony86
Never click on a bill that you receive through email. Always login directly to said companies website.

I'd be willing to bet that most people don't know their CC limit, so a scammer could pick a number out of a hat.

Really? wow (that people wouldn't know that).

Really? My Amex limit is about 6x more than my balance has ever been; I had to look it up because it's extremely unlikely that I will ever get anywhere near it. It's not a number that I ever expect to affect me, so why bother remembering it?
