eBay seems to have removed the ability to split payment for purchases in PayPal.

eBay makes it exhausting to do business through them... apparently they really hate their customers. It's bad enough they're constantly trying to force buyers to set a default payment instrument before they can place a bid, now the PayPal interface has been "updated" to squeeze the UI vertically... because why would you want to have a better experience when you can have a TON of wasted space on either side of the limited strip of working space?  On top of that they've taken away the ability to split the payment between two sources, like between a couple of credit cards, or a CC and a bank account. I wonder if eBay employees get bonuses for coming up with new ways to degrade the buyer experience?

PayPal is treated like any other payment source, except when the functionality of PayPal is less than a credit or debit card, like when an authorization hold is required, then PayPal is not accepted.

The function you seek is not available on credit or debit cards and not available for PayPal. Few Ebay buyers need to spread their payments for a single order over multiple payment methods.

PayPal has always been an outlier, loved or hated by people who have used it, and not a normal payment service.

Since Ebay unloaded it, they no longer do extra work to support its features, They use a normal payment processor for their other payment methods.

I used the PayPal split option just this morning, so the option is apparently still available when choosing PayPal at checkout on eBay, though admittedly I was seeing the old, wide PayPal wallet page, not the newer, narrow version that seems to lack that split option. I tried using a private browser window and saw the newer, narrow version of the PayPal wallet page, so perhaps when my cookies are next overwritten I will be stuck with the new format minus the split option.

I just tried checking out using the eBay app, and when I chose PayPal at checkout, the split option appeared there, so if you seem to be stuck with the narrow version on desktop, try paying through the eBay app. That may work for you.

"The function you seek is not available on credit or debit cards and not available for PayPal." - To be clear, that function WAS available on PayPal when used through eBay prior to today. I recognize that it's likely an edge case that most users don't avail themselves of, but it's frustrating that it's yet another function taken away by eBay. From what I've been able to find it's an option PayPal makes available, but it's at the discretion of the retailer... so, if that's true, it's eBay that has chosen to take it away.

I always use Firefox in private mode and have it set to delete history and cookies when it closes to help avoid getting an experience tailored to what sites think I want to see. I also avoid using the eBay app if I can because I find it lacking in functionality over using it through a browser on my laptop... but looking at the PayPal experience I think eBay is trying to force customers to get used to the app type of experience. I put some screenshots up on Imgur.com to illustrate the garbage UI:

In the first image you can see the options for how you can pay don't even fit horizontally... they push off the right edge for absolutely no reason, because there's CLEARLY plenty of room on the page. More than 2/3 of the page is unused space... it's a terrific demonstration of awful web page design.

Looking at the next two images, which show what a user gets when they open up the "Pay with" section. You can clearly see there's no longer an option for splitting the payment.

It's really a drag that eBay puts so much effort into degrading the experience. This isn't a situation where I'm frustrated over a feature I wish they'd add... it's the fact that their taking one away.

Sadly I may be forced to use the app for the times I want to split payments... which both sucks and blows. The notion that I may be forced to switch between devices instead of eBay simply keeping everything available on BOTH is frustrating. Of course there's always the likelihood they'll take this away from the app too... why break one user experience when you can do two?
