eBay sent notice that they were cancelling a sale because of concerns about a week or two after I sent the item. I also am now not able to find that transaction nor the money deposited in my account. Am I now out the money and the item?

'out the money'...how do you know you still don't have the money from the sale?
It's been 'a week or two'.
eBay normally lets a seller keep the funds from such a 'sale' as this.
The only way for you to lose the funds is the buyer to do a 'credit card dispute' which would put funds 'on hold' from this sale.

Sellers are usually protected from losing out on the money in situations like this, Yes, the item is shipped and gone, but ebay will pay you. If you haven't received payment then there is more to your situation than being presented.

not enough context provided here, if you shipped the item on time to the verified address with tracking and it "showed" delivered (even though perhaps now deleted from ebay) then you would have been paid or the money is still on hold if you are having funds held. The monetary transaction will still be on record on the date it was transacted. just because ebay removed the listing, doesn't mean they or you get to skip the tax from the transaction, they can't just keep the money.
if it was never delivered or you have no proof of delivery then you are likely s.o.l. and the buyer gets to keep it and there money. ebay refunds them, charges you there fee's and you can kiss it all goodbye.
Over the years I have had a few misc listings removed & deleted, usually due to fraud on the buyers end, I have still been paid in every single situation. (only because I followed the rules as required)
