The same eBay Gift Card scammers that took advantage of people in 2017 are still doing it in 2021. Apparently, they're now posting ads on FB Marketplace and once someone bids on it they redirect them to eBay. In my BILs case they sent him this bogus invoice with eBay's logo on it instructing him to buy multiple eBay and American Express gift cards and with very strict instructions on how to send it to them.
So glad my BIL, who's not tech savvy at all, decided to check it out before he followed through. Luckily I was able to prove to him it was bogus because I ran a google search on Ebay Gift Card scams and immediately a post written back in 2017 by some Ebay user popped up describing a remarkably similar experience where the victim was scammed out of $4000 for a camper. SMH - the one sent to my BIL was for a food truck camper too, but his was in the amount of $1700.
I'm not here to judge or ridicule anyone. Big or small, we've all been taken advantage of at some point in our lives. The goal and purpose here is "each one, teach one". Seems I'm constantly preventing my 72 year old mom from these crazy scams so this can happen to anyone of us. Please be careful people. Verify the legitimacy of every Ebay Seller and listing BEFORE sending them any form of payment. In this case, the listing he showed my husband didn't even exist on Ebay, anywhere. I also did a search for the seller's name AND it didn't exist either so that's suspect right there. And don't just stop at verifying the seller and ad because these shiesty people catfish Ebay seller's with good ratings to steal their identify as well as pictures of their listings to trick you into thinking they're legit. So if the scammer's done their homework and those things appear to check out, but you still have reservation then do as my mom and dad always advised me and "follow your first mind". Remember if it sounds too good to be true, sadly it is!

It has been going on a lot further back than 2017. Unfortunately it will continue until people quit falling for the scam.

Not really enough information in your message to offer specific help. Did you fall for the scam on another site where you saw a car for sale at a very low price and were told the sale would go through eBay, but you would have to pay with gift cards?
If your answer is "yes" to the above question, I regret to tell you this, but you have been royally scammed and your money is gone.
This transaction had absolutely nothing at all to do with eBay. And gift cards are non-refundable as well as non-traceable. Hope you did not lose much money.
All you can do is report this to the site where you found the item listed for sale. That site was (I repeat) NOT eBay.

If you have to constantly prevent your mom from scams it's time to take her phone and computer away and close her bank account, or take away her debit and credit cards.
