When did eBay get so greedy?

I want to delete my account altogether. I hate that eBay is done with PayPal. It has been in the works for a while but I’m not happy about eBay taking another THREE percent of MY sales!! I thought  the 10% was already too high now they want more??? My sales totals are a joke. I hardly see any profit after my initial cost, shipping and fees. I also hate the fake eBay gurus who lie and say you can make a living by shopping at the thrift store. Most sellers are dropshipping and wholesaling for cents on the dollar just to make a profit.
I miss when this **bleep** was a spot for rare and vintage finds. Anybody else ready to walk?

@1tim617

In MP we no longer pay the 2.9% PP funds processing fees.

When averaged out, my MP fees run about the same as before. YMMV

My break about even point is when sales tax is about 6%.

If lower than 6% the MP "simplified fees" are a bit less than not MP.

Some have taken a "walk".

Some will stay.

What I sell does not fit well with other venues.  I will stay. Have been doing MP for nearly 16 months.

Remains to be seen. I think it's a shame that they are making this big transition in the middle of a time period when they are unable to offer support for it. They should have postponed until they could staff the phones or chat properly. It shows a lack of responsibility on their part.

To your point about what eBay used to be - I tend to agree but would say they are losing sight of what they actually are. Chasing Amazon buyers...then offering a worse customer experience from both the seller and buyer side spells trouble. Maybe it will work, I can only speak for myself right now but Is eBay worth it enough to you to hand over your bank account? Do you trust them with your SSN?

I'll do it with a business account and EIN. Maybe.

Hate to say it...

But as a buyer I still have better experiences here than elsewhere.

And maybe it's just that I'm used to it, but regardless I'm staying.

Yea no more PayPal fees but they have simply been replace by others pretty much a no gain or loss for the sellers so I will probably hand around for a little bit also although I have greatly diversified across other ecommerce platforms. I always like to have options.

“anybody else ready to walk”

Your posse started riding out a year and a half ago. Some had no choice, some went quietly into the night, Of course this salloon’s been been shot up a few times by the real fighters.
But it’s how it will be here up to the end of 2021 when everyone will be switched over.

You must sell under another ID because I don't see you have anything listed and only 13 FB for the past 12 months.  ?

I would positively agree with you on not rolling MP out when they did. But possibly they didn't have a choice as Paypal may have been kicking them out contractually.

Shows how much I know. I thought it was Dec 31st for everyone. Because even my smaller account here just got put on MP notice.

There's a whole other year of PayPal for the smaller sellers?

There is one key point in your statement that resonates loud and clear with me. "Chasing Amazon buyers". No company ever got ahead by chasing another companies ideas or practices. Those that do find that by the time they get there they are still behind the power curve. To quote Jack Welch “If the rate of change on the outside exceeds the rate of change on the inside, the end is near.”

So many organizations are massively out of sync with the external rate of change. Everything is internally focused. Everything is focused around maintaining things as they are and protecting existing revenue streams, existing product lines and existing modus operandi. The companies who live in day one (In Startup Mode like Amazon) constantly survey their ecosystem, constantly survey what is going on outside their businesses and thus are not taken by “surprise” disruption.

When did eBay get so greedy?

Hi, though PayPal is still a choice for buyers, like you, I also like PayPal as a seller.

Ebay is different than it used to be, and in another decade, it will likely be changed from what it is today too. So, I am staying. Others managed to learn the new system; so will I, even though change can be frustrating. To make it work, I don't look at the platform as having traits like greed, selfishness, etc. It has an obligation to its shareholders to make as much a profit as it can, and i feel that doesn't negate its obligation to its users. One hopes the two are not mutually exclusive.

Out of the millions of sellers on eBay, lots of them do make a living. (Not drinking the kool-aid, just making an observation.) We may not hear from the many who do, here on the discussion boards perhaps. We are a miniscule group compared to all the millions of buyers and sellers.

Sorry you are having a rough go. I imagine you are not alone. Good luck to you, and hope matters turn around soon.

Not me.

I used to pay 10% to eBay and 2.9% to PayPal.

Now I pay 12.35% to eBay and nothing to PayPal.

It's pretty much a wash for me.

It still is for me. Very few dropshippers are selling vintage music memorabilia.

"I thought the 10% was already too high now they want more??? My sales totals are a joke. I hardly see any profit after my initial cost, shipping and fees."

Profits are based a seller's ability to understand and balance all the costs (Item cost, advertising fees here, etc) to the realistic selling price here.   Sales totals are an indication the decisions a seller makes, when they decide exactly what resellable item to buy, and at what initial cost.

Fees?  Try owning a brick and mortar store.  Or renting antique mall space.  The overhead (fixed costs) can kill you, even with great amount of sales.  eBay is a steal, in my opinion, and I've sold for years here on other accounts.  And I do free shipping, and 60 day free returns which include Me paying for return shipping, including buyer's remorse.

"I also hate the fake eBay gurus who lie and say you can make a living by shopping at the thrift store."

We're not lying.  Entrepreneurs can successfully make a living on eCommerce.  But it takes a wide array of knowledge and talent.

"Most sellers are dropshipping and wholesaling for cents on the dollar just to make a profit."

Most smart sellers are not drop shipping.  Some do, but they have the unique ability to do that specific task, in a way that few other drop shippers do.  (sourcing, pricing, etc)

Many sellers find a niche.  Something that they can do, knowledge about products or a specific product line that few other sellers here, have in that specific area.

It's not easy.  It can take years.. and even then ... ?

That's why there's business courses in virtually every US school.  Entrepreneurship.. business ownership, is very challenging.   Thomas Edison supposedly was a failure  99 times trying to invent the light bulb, before he succeeded.  (sorry, I'm not preaching.  Many millionaire / billionaires failed in multiple businesses before striking it rich)

Thanks,

Lynn
