I don't use Ebay much and thought a sale was done and over with. Buyer bought an older device that is out of warranty and filed a dispute through PayPal for a defective device. I missed the notifications so it ended in favor of the buyer. I see that the dispute ended and I was being charged, I go to looking for tracking information for a return and there is nothing. I go to message the buyer and notice the buyer has the item for sale as new open box to test for functionality, no mention of any defect. Because I did not respond I am no protected by ebay seller protections. Now I am out a decent amount of money and the item because the buyer says PayPal said they don't have to return the device and they no longer have it. PayPal can't do anything, Ebay can't do anything, if I keep disputing the charge to my account I'll just be sent to collections. Missed a couple emails and it cost me nearly $1000.

Yep. When you don't act, eBay steps in and the buyer keeps the item and gets their money back.
That whole process is quite a bit of time...no excuse not to keep up with it. Even if you don't go on eBay much, you should monitor your sales once in a while for at least the 30 days after.
