Can one use an invoice number to look up on EBay to track whether it is legit?

Not by invoice number.  Did you find the item on eBay or another site and they sent you an invoice.  If found on another site, it is a SCAM!

Every listing on eBay has an item number in the listing.  What is it?

If you gave your name and email address to someone selling something you found on a non-eBay site like Facebook, OfferUp or Craigslist and they said eBay is handling the sale, you received a FAKE invoice.  Forward it to  spoof@ebay.com and report the fraudulent ad on the site you found it.

eBay never assists in payments or sales of items on other sites.  Nor will they ever ask you to pay with gift cards.
