I refused to accept Managed Payments and left Ebay.

23 Years ago, a friend showed me this new website called Ebay.  I was immediately hooked.  I began buying and selling within weeks.

Back then, selling was a hassle because getting paid was a hassle.  Then came Paypal.

In my opinion, Paypal was the magic sauce that made Ebay work.

I sold on and off for the last 23 years.  I retired, and planned on using Ebay as a source of income in my retirement.

Over the recent years, my opinion of Ebay began to decline big time.

A couple of years ago, they instituted their GOOD TILL CANCELLED for Buy It Now listings.  I sold collectables and that policy KILLED my sales.  I tried to get the policy changed, but Ebay didn't care.  They were MANAGING my sales, and it killed me.

A couple of months ago, I was notified I was being forced into Managed Payments.  I read about the program, and didn't see any benefit for ME.

I spoke with several dedicated Managed Payments reps, and again, there was no benefit for me as a seller.  I clearly told every rep that the day Ebay forced MP on me was the day I would leave Ebay.

I begged to postpone to a later time.  Covid19 is rampant, and now isn't the time to add insult to injury.  They didn't care.

That day was Sept. 1.

So, as I sit here, a trusted friend I've had for 23 years is gone.  I removed all my listings, I'm no longer selling on Ebay.

Now, I understand Ebay could care less about me.  That's become obvious over the last several years.

If 10, or 100, or 1000 sellers leave, Ebay won't care.  BUT, if 10,000 or 100,000 leave, at some point, Ebay HAS to care.

I made my statement by leaving, and telling Ebay why I left.  If you feel as I do, make your own statement.  If Ebay is going to force sellers to choose MP, it should be better then Paypal.

Try not to worry. Most of the people that come to these boards, come with a host of problems or grievances. They are a very minute percentage of eBay users. You rarely see someone come in here just to state how smooth managed payments is working for them. They're too busy making money, I suspect. I was very intimidated at the thought of managed payments when I first heard about the program. I couldn't imagine what the hell eBay was thinking. Came in here, only to read one horror story after another. However, there are some very helpful sellers here that are truly the voice of reason and can help with any legitimate question you have about MP (you'll soon recognize which posters are here to actually help you). Managed payments ended up working really well for me. Aside from waiting a few days for the money, it's about the same. I don't have a cash flow problem, so waiting 2-4 days for my money is no big deal. I'm still making the same kind of money I was before, as MP really has no affect on sales. Find out what you can here and see if you think it can work for you. I'm sure it can. It's not that big of a leap.

Register for MP as soon as you can.  Registering doesn't make MP start any quicker on your listings but gives Ebay time to process your information and if they need further info there is time to ask you and get it cleared up before you go active.  That will help prevent any money being held.

Also BEFORE you sign up.  Make sure the REGISTERED name you have on your Ebay account PERFECTLY matches the checking account you want to attach.  This is the most common reason for there being a problem.  Even something like a middle initial on one and not the other will be enough to cause an issue.  So verify this before you register.

Here is some light reading for you.  Feel free to ask all the questions you need to when you are done.

Wow! This MP is totally junk (they keep bleeping non cuss words with more power than junk). I've been on Ebay for 22+ years; this new MP is another way for Ebay to make money off of sellers by having such lag time in paying out funds. I want the money in my paypal that day, not in my bank account 5 days later.

I'll be looking for another platform.

I have been on eBay for almost 21 years. At first I was just a buyer. Then I started selling 15 years ago. I loved it! It was only a hobby as I  had a fulltime job working at an insurance agency.  I have increased my selling on eBay since I retired 4 1/2 years ago. I do not have a business as it is still just a hobby.

If I am forced into managed payments, I will leave. There is absolutely no way that I will allow eBay to have access to my checking or savings accounts! Doing so will open up more ways for fraud.

I have been researching other selling sites and believe I have found one that is similar to what eBay used to be before making all of the changes.  If it works, great. If it doesn't, then I will have a big sale at my house to get rid of my items. What is left will be donated to charity.  I will then have more room in my house, more freedom to travel, and a whole lot less STRESS!!! PLUS my checking and savings accounts will be a lot more secure. Win, Win, WIN for me!

This is EXACTLY my own experience. I joined eBay in 1999 and it was different, it was fun and a new dynamic way to sell. I bought and sold. I sold items for local charity and earned them thousands in funds that they would have never achieved in their shop, all to a good cause and I did it for them for free. As a result of the number of transactions, I was forced to register as a business seller. That was the start of eBay’s bully-boy tactics over many years after that. Huge fee and FVF increases. Then the use of overseas help centres, then what I believe to be the deliberate hiding of their contact number and forcing people to use help pages instead of talking to a real person. Then the removal of placing negative feedback on awful buyers by sellers who can now only leave positive or not at all.

I have just this minute finished speaking to a MP specialist at eBay. I told him that I would stop selling on eBay on my current ‘business’ account since I don’t do much these days, and open another account but he told me that soon ALL eBay sellers will have to go to MP and yes, this will allow them to TAKE money from my bank account  whenever they feel they need to. He said many people are opening another bank account specially for eBay but gave a wry sigh when I asked exactly who eBay thinks it is to force hitherto loyal, long-term customers to have to do this in order to sell a few household possessions or bits and bobs. He then suggested merely being a buyer only by not agreeing to MP requests. I pointed out that eBay has, over the last several years, become a rotten place to sell with a focus on buyer protection and not seller protection and that PayPal has always been a trusted method for me (21 years of PayPal) and that, quite frankly, I don’t trust eBay to represent my interest when I sell. I said I wouldn’t buy via eBay either. The eBay representative said I’m not the only one to have said that.

So, for me, after over 20 years of eBay, I’m now finished with it.

I appreciate your loss of a “trusted friend”. I feel exactly the same way myself. I e been an eBay user since 1999....quite a veteran, comparatively. But I noticed several years ago that eBay started turning into a playground bully and flexing its muscles with lots of the attributes that made eBay such a great place to trade. It seemed to want to rid itself of the early pioneer users and favour large shops, huge sellers, Chinese sellers masquerading as U.K. or US sellers and avoiding sales taxes and making returns impossible.  eBay then started increasing fees and FVF, then imposing all sorts of terms and conditions which now make it a hazardous place to sell from a seller’s perspective. Relatively local call centres were replaced by overseas ones, usually in the Philippines. Scam listings abound but reporting them appears to have no result whatsoever. Nobody at the call centres has the authority to act and merely parrot phrases about taking my report seriously etc but weeks later the scam listings are still there. In the background, I’ve always been reassured by PayPal (20 years as a user). I’ve had several cases of purchases which were incorrect items sent, damaged etc and eBay ruled against me on disputes BUT I was reimbursed by PayPal. Now eBay want to remove this backstop and dip into my bank account (with my forced agreement....) whenever they want. Quite frankly, I don’t trust eBay one bit and sure as hell would never, ever allow them access to your bank account! Their policy is “agree to let us do it, or you can’t sell here”. Fine, that tells me what I have to do.

I asked a managed payment specialist today who the hell ebay think they are?

I personally have got sick of eBay over the last few years and this latest strong arm tactic of forcing me to accept MP or not being a seller has been the final straw. I have no intention of selling on eBay ever again. I may not even buy there.

I used exactly your words in my conversation today....I felt like I finally had to say goodbye to a hitherto trusted (but now toxic) friend. So enough is enough for me...I’m finished with eBay after over 20 years

To think that eBay will just dip into your bank account "whenever they feel they need to" is a ridiculous notion. It would only be if YOU gave them a reason to. How long do you think eBay would stay in business taking money from seller's bank accounts whenever they feel like it? Good luck to you if you ever sell again. Good luck to you if you don't.

eBay Managed Payments needs to step up. Waiting days for funds is like going back to the 1990s. In the digital age payments became instant via options like PayPal . You got paid and instantly you could use the funds in your PayPal account or even retrieve them immediately with a PayPal debit card. I understand eBays desire to handle payments , but it’s a bit ridiculous for it to be so slow. Seems like a money grab in the mix here somewhere . NOT an improvement in my eyes.

In point of fact, there's nothing 'digital age' about Paypal's 'instant' payment - it's because Paypal fronted us the money before the original payment ever cleared.  Basically, they held our hand.  Now we actually have to deal with cash flow and payment processing lags just like every other merchant.

I have been selling on Ebay since 1999 but unfortunately Managed Payments is not something I want to deal with - - turning over my bank account info to Ebay = not

- shipping items out before I get paid = not

- trusting Ebay to forward the funds = not

Ebay has had security breaches in the past.  In 2014, they waited over a month to notify customers that their account data was exposed.  Now, they want to be the middleman on all payments - buyer sends money to Ebay, Ebay holds it and tells seller to ship, Ebay then sends money to seller bank account.  What could go wrong?

Does not work for me.

You are awesome!  I feel the same way, right now, some people are stuck because of Covid and the economy... lots of people have no choice because they need the money to pay bills.... but the last few years eBay has shown they have no care for the sellers, which, without us, there would be nothing to sell, and hence, nothing to buy.... and no money to be made by eBay.  Their business tactics are just dumb and crazy.

They back the buyers and have ZERO concern about the sellers... Well maybe when enough of us get sick of their B   S  (had to censor myself) they will realize what a mistake that was.

The old adage of the customer is always right, is antiquated and crazy in this day and age.

You also have some mis-information about how MP functions.  So if you have questions and are willing to keep an open mind.  Just ask.  There are active MP members on the boards that can give you the facts.  It isn't a perfect system, that is for sure.  It isn't a wallet like PP that is true too.
