Feeling optimistic about payment disputes in MP!!

Today I received a payment dispute and immediately felt the internal dread of held funds begin to seep down my spine, but went ahead and added the tracking number showing the item had been delivered like always. A few minutes later, I received another email saying the dispute had been closed and I was covered. Just like good 'ol PayPal used to do - things are looking up!

Had the same experience with my only(knock on wood) MP "charge back".

@popblox  glad to hear everything worked like it should! I've also had good luck with payment disputes in Managed Payments, but I know that hasn't always been the case for others.

If you don't mind sharing, what was the stated reason for dispute? All of the disputes I've personally dealt with were "unauthorized/did not recognize transaction" type disputes and they worked just like you described and just like they used to with PayPal - as long as I've provided tracking with a delivery scan and signature confirmation if the total is over $750, it has been closed in my favor.

The reason I'm curious is some sellers who have not received seller protection on disputes have indicated the dispute was filed as something like "didn't receive refund" in situations where there was no refund due because the item had never been returned.

Oddly enough I don't see anything about "didn't receive refund" in any of eBay's documentation about payment disputes & seller protections, so it seems like it may be a bit of a gray area.

I had one last month where the buyer used his mother's credit card and she filed a "charge not recognized" dispute with the credit card company. The buyer won, got his item for free, but ebay covered the loss and I didn't lose anything. Last week another buyer used his company credit card and they filed a dispute. The case is still open, but the buyer will get his items for free and either I or ebay will take the loss. I hope ebay seller protection covers me again.  This looks like an easy scam that may become a problem for sellers in the future.

@valueaddedresource

Yes, this one was 'buyer didn't recognize the transaction' and, actually, I think all of my payment disputes have had that same reason. I've had 30-40 payment disputes since I started MP last September, but this is the first time it's been resolved so quickly. All others have taken at least 30 days, some as long as 8 weeks.

I had one buyer file 7 disputes for multiple purchases they made over 2 months totalling $1300. There was valid tracking showing all the items had been delivered so I was covered, but in the end eBay issued refunds to the buyer for ALL of it.

I'm glad that I'm covered by seller protection, but at the same time, I don't understand why eBay also refunds the buyer (to no end) for items that are delivered to the buyers front door simply because they "dispute" it.  How can you dispute the purchase of an item you own? Wouldn't that make it stolen and raise some kind of flag somewhere?

Thanks for confirming that @popblox .

eBay says they keep track of how often buyers file disputes like this and that they will take action if they determine a buyer is engaging in "abusive" behavior, but it's not clear where that line is drawn, how eBay determines when "enough is enough", and what the consequences actually are.

It's also hard not to feel like encouraging this kind of behavior costs us all in the end - especially since many categories incurred fee increases in the last month.  But ultimately in some of these cases at least it may not be up to eBay - it may be the credit card company forcing the refund.

That's pretty much exactly what I was thinking. I know there's nothing we can do about it (directly), I'm really just astonished at the length of the leash eBay provides to buyers in this regard. It's just a massive amount of blatant fraud - I can't imagine the banks/credit card companies are any happier about it than we are.

The credit card companies never lose anything. It's the merchant that loses. They always pass off any loss to the merchant. I got burned a few times when I had a brick and mortar store.

We have had 12 payment disputes so far under managed payments all covered except for one Item not as described so it's all rainbows and unicorns until buyers figure this out. PayPal however protected against INAD chargebacks as well and required the buyer return the item eBay does not.

Did the buyer provide any evidence that the item wasn't as described and/or did you provide any evidence in the photo that it was as described? Just trying to understand all the details.

The way they are doing it is they use a credit card belonging to someone at a different address. Then the credit card holder files a dispute (charge not recognized) and since the item wasn't sent to the card holder's address, they win the case and the buyer gets the item for free. Ebay could stop it by requiring the credit card holder have the same address as the buyer.
