Ebay wants my personal bank account number to verify my checking account. this is outrageous. Evry bank in America tells you not to do that. what are the ramifications? I don't trust them. I have been scammed before and they had no response for that. Not helpful at all.

How do you expect to get your payout if they have no idea where to send it to? The ssn is for tax purposes, you can thank the irs for that. Any seller that sells more then $600 annually has to report that money to the IRS and ebay has to send that information in by law.

How else are you going to get your money? PayPal is no longer used and if your sales reach $600 or more a social security number is required to issue you a 1099 so eBay can report your sales income to the IRS. The ramifications are, if you don’t comply with the requirements then any and all moneys will be sent to your states unclaimed property division which could take months.
All sellers are required to submit this info. I did 2 years ago with no issues whatsoever..I have a separate checking account specifically for eBay payouts.
Updating your checking account details for payouts.

I have one question…do you have 2 pairs of Christian Louboutin shoes? Because you have 2 listings for the same shoe, if they both sell you will have a problem.

The information is not exactly confidential, but I understand your trepidation I guess....
Just open a separate account like you did your Paypal account with a multitude of Free online checking accounts avaiable to you. Your own bank may even have the option to open a free account online within minutes.....

Every bank tells you not to get paid?
You need to find some more banks.

"Ebay wants my personal bank account number to verify my checking account. this is outrageous."
eBay has my personal bank account number and the routing number for my bank.
My local utility company has my bank's routing number and my checking account number.
My car insurance and home insurance companies have my bank's routing number and my checking account number.
The issuers of my two active credit cards have my bank's routing number and my checking account number.
My internet provider and my cell phone provider both have my bank's routing number and my checking account number.
As a potential eBay seller, giving your bank's routing number and your checking account number to eBay is no more dangerous or outrageous than having your monthly cell phone or car insurance payment directly and automatically debited from your checking account.

Get a second banking account for payouts. So simple. Basically you open a new account at a bank...they give you a debit card...no free checks...but you can use it for payouts. Not sure of your age but over 65 years of age US Bank gives free banking with no minimum required....you get the debit card and thus can have money put into it.
I have two bank accounts. Just in case one has a problem. They are just debit cards...no checks.
A lot of delivery people in Doordash or drivers in Uber have a second bank account to receive their funds.

Unless you want to get paid for your sales and not wait for the funds to go to your state's Unclaimed Property Dept.

There are millions of sellers here and every one that is in the USA has had to give their social security number to ebay inorder to keep selling. I don't know what they do in other countries. Give them the number and relax. You can also get a separate free bank account and use that just for the ebay stuff.
If you decide to go sell in other platforms in the USA, guess what you have to give them in order to be allowed to sell? Answer: Your social security number.

Any one you wrire a check to can see your account number, routing number, address and phone number. If there was a problem about divulging this info to ebay (in order to receive payouts), there would be a worldwide outcry.

I want to add that if the seller refuses to give ebay that Social security number, eventually ebay will send his funds to his state. Then the poster has to crack his head trying to get his money back from his state and he will have to give his state the social security number inorder to get his money back.
Give ebay what ebay wants and they will let you sell in peace. (Well , most of the time, they will leave you in peace as long as you do everything right.
