Got a reconditioned Airbag - is this acceptable?

Hello all! Have to write here because I did buy a reconditioned BMW M steering wheel with an Airbag from Romania. Seemd like a really trusworthy seller with ~1500 feedbacks and 99.8%. The steering wheel was really nice quality job, but the airbag is totally different thing. I got suspicious when I saw small cracks on the airbag cover, so I took the cover off(small clips, no need to break anything) and the bag istelf was like an old potato sack. It was squeeze in under the cover, not nicely folded like from factory, it was dirty, and on the inside was debris and trash an from explosion.

There is two thing that can have been done, maybe they has added a new explosion charge from another airbag(same item in many steering wheel models), or they have soldered an resistor to fool the airbag light in the car. I don't wan't to test if it works. Either way, this kind of recondition would not be leagal in my country, either would I trust such an ghetto mod.

Anyway the seller would not accept any kind of refund or return, and now ebay has also solved this case for the sellers benefit. They say I can not return the item as it's not in same shape as recieved. I can pack everything back under the cover no problem, but trash is trash. I can't make it be a new airbag, because this is what I recieved.

What is your thought on this? Is this kind of action acceptable? What to do?

"Reconditioned airbag"? LOL- no such thing.

My thoughts? Don't buy stuff from Romania or eastern Europe...anything from there is either misrepresented or a complete scam.

If the pirce is too good to be true.....you know why.

Is the seller's good feedback strictly from selling automotive parts, or did he sell $2 trinkets and iPhone covers to get it? Go to toolhaus(dot)org and enter his seller ID there, and see how his feedback really looks...I'll bet it's not so good.

I'm guessing you bought a reconditioned steering wheel and the airbag was included gratis. Not sure of Ebay policy in Europe, but in the USA recon airbags are prohibited to sell.

This is the seller: https://www.ebay.com/usr/valy776tanasescu

My negative feedback was also deleted. So no warning to people, they just buy steering wheels with airbags not knowing what they are. I wouldn't have opened mine if the cover didn't had the cracks what made me suspicious.

Not mentioned anything about free Airbag. This is exact same sale, same pics and anything, not real pics that he tells: https://www.ebay.com/itm/bmw-e90-e92-e93-e81-e87-M-steering-whell-airbag-reconditioned/142661359270

Says, This auction is for a bmw e90 e92 e93 e81 e87 M steering whell reconditioned complete with controls and airbag.

That says the wheel is reconditioned and he includes the airbag with no mention of it's condition. I supposed you could open a case with Paypal saying it's not as described, but once you took it apart, they won't help you. Maybe contact your credit card about a chargeback.

@thuppu

You should never buy or use ANY used airbag. They can be incredibly dangerous.

Many BMW airbags are under recall because their inflators are dangerous. The inflator in your picture was manufactured by the company whose inflators are being recalled, but there is no way to know if it was under recall. It is a live inflator, which means it can fire if it gets the signal to do so. It has not been deployed.

https://www.nhtsa.gov/recall-spotlight/takata-air-bags

It is possible that the inflator was replaced as part of the recall, but it is also possible that the airbag was "reconditioned" as you say, in which case it may be extremely dangerous even to handle because it may not have been "reconditioned" safely.

There is no way to tell about the  cloth airbag itself because it was not disassembled correctly, and it can't be put back together now. I would take that airbag to a BMW dealer and get them to dispose of it. This has to be done by trained personnel.

If eBay has rejected the return request, then you can file a case with PayPal for "item not as described". If that doesn't work, then do a chargeback with the credit card that you used for payment.

Yes, that was my listing. The airbag can easily be put together just like it was when I got it, no problem. I play with cars a lot, and it isn't really hard to get the airbag cloth in and cover back on. The front cap is just fitted with plastic clips which are not broken. As I told in the start post the cloth(bag itself) was just squeezed in, not nicely folded like from factory. Also there is a red yarn going around the bag, it is broken.

And yes, it sure can be a live inflator. But in so case it has been switched from another airbag. Bag itself and the cover is used, they have exploded for sure. You see also the paint on the bolts/nuts, that paint isn't there by the factory. Some other has put it there. The seller told about seal(I assume it's the paint), and in one message he admitted the airbag was reconditioned... So I really don't get how ebay closed the dispute so fast without hearing me properly..?

What you appear to have is a deployed air back that has been stuffed back into the steering wheel and the cover attached.  That is no reconditioned in the sense that the air bag would work.  Cosmetically, however, the steering wheel would look okay.

No one that I know repairs the air bag itself.  It has a ballistic charge to rapidly inflate and once the charge is spent, the bag is junk.

I think that the seller is clever calling it "reconditioned" since the cosmetic part probably is but there is no functionality.

I would report this transaction to the Transportation Safety board since they are importing substandard goods into the US this way.

Thank you for your reply. You are right, this is not a thing that should be done. Sorry, I didn't mention, I live in Finland, but this would not be leagal to do here either. Posted the pics to a couple of our car hobby forums here, and everyone was telling that is junk you can throw in the recycle bin.

I agreee with Tony. Looks like the bag deployed and then was just stuffed back in!

Gotta love it! Who thinks the OP should send the seller a few "reconditioned" prophylactics?

I have been designing airbags for 3 decades.

I can't tell if the airbag was deployed or not. The picture of the bag pulled out of the module is not clear. And, not all airbags are neatly folded. There was one design that just gets scrunched up. But if it was deployed, then both the inflator and the cover have been replaced.

The inflator (what people here are calling the "charge") looks like it is live, and has NOT been deployed (fired). The cover of the airbag module would have been torn open if the bag was deployed.

At the very least, it looks like the inflator may have been replaced for some reason. There was a news report late last year that said NHTSA had found out that some BMW airbag modules had the inflators replaced, and they had to be added to the arbag recall as a result.

The damage that can be seen on the cover (small cracks or slits) can happen if the module is not properly stored or handled, or not properly packaged for shipment (basically, if it gets beaten up). I found a picture online (see below) that shows what this type of airbag cover would look like if the airbag had deployed through the cover. The cover in your pictures does not have enough damage to have been through a deployment.

No matter what the story here, this airbag is not safe to use or to have around.

FYI, no matter how much of a Car Guy you are, It is not safe to dismantle an airbag if you don't know how that particular one should be handled.

DO NOT throw it in the junk bin. It's dangerous and it needs to be taken to a dealer, who should either have a specially trained mechanic who can deploy it, or who can send it back to the supplier. In Europe, they are required to recycle these, so there is a process in place to deal with old airbag modules.

Or give it to LB along with a bottle of vodka and let him have some fun wit it. He's specially trained. Or just special.
