Engine Oil Change Procedure

For the average DIY, oil changes are easier with the engine cold.  Since a lot of people advocate starting the engine and brining it to operating temperature before draining, I do not.  Here's my procedure.

  • With the engine cold, either raise the vehicle on a lift or set it on jack stands.  Do not start the engine and if using a lift, put it on the lift the night before.
  • Drain the engine oil cold.  The gravity will pull the oil down to the lowest section of the engine.  If your oil filter sits vertical, it will either empty the oil out and down into the pan, or the oil will settle in the filter.
  • Let the oil drain overnight.  It is easier to work on everything with the engine cold.  While the oil is draining, install a new filter and do any other service that is needed.
  • The next day, install the drain plug and a new seal, add the proper amount of oil and check for leaks.
  • You're done.

Being a DIY, I always have another car to drive when one is being serviced.
