Anybody Know When GM Quit Putting Parts in Carboard/Metal Cans?

Picked this up off a free table at a garage sale today. Yes, the NOS 4-cyl. cap is in there even though it's been opened. The can has a Zip Code on it, so it's post-'64.  Can aybody put a 'no later than' date on it? TIA!

Can't say that I ever saw a distributor cap in a can!

In the old days they sold oil in cans, so anything is possible.

Almost all Delco-Remy parts used to come in this packaging.  I got into the auto parts business in the mid 70's and Delco was still shipping parts in these types of containers.  Can't remember the exact dates, but parts started coming in pasteboard packaging and plastic bags shortly thereafter.  I always liked the "can" type package with the pull string all the way around.  They were hard to reseal, however, if the part you ordered was the wrong one.  The later packaging was much easier to reseal if needed.  That may have prompted the change away from the old package once parts proliferation began to take place.

What do you mean you don't have anything in it? In the first post you said the NOS 4-cyl. cap is in there.

Do a google search and find what it fits, it may be worth more than you think.

It fits a John Deere tractor 1964 and up, and some others.

They sell for 15 bucks and shipping.

Today they are made in Mexico and no doubt China.

Yours was made in America, and I bet better quality.

I would list it at 25.00 and put best offer.

I would put in big red letters that it is a made in America original item.

I meant I didn't have any money (invested) in it. I guess I'll list it and highlight the original, higher-quality aspect. "Delco Remy Made in USA" is even molded into the top of the cap, for the last 100th of a point in someone's restoration. 😉

Found that the cap dates to 1963 and up 4 cyls for Minneapolis Moline Tractor models M670 & U302. You can get them online for $10.95

GM/AC Delco used to have to pack in better longer lasting packaging when cares were made better and parts didn't sell as quickly.

GM in the 70's had some very serious quality problems and parts flew off dealers shelves negating the need for longer term packaging. Those quality issues hurt GM as it gave rise to more imported car sales where Japanese cars gained market share.

GM has gotten better but foreign manufacturers were here to stay and some have built plants if America proving thousands of jobs for American.

This will GM went out of the Oldsmobile and Pontiac business completely and taxpayers had to bail out GM and Chrysler.

GM used our tax dollars to build Buicks in China

Chrysler used our tax dollars to dress themselves up to sell out to Fiat.  Fiat used to mean, Fix It Again Tony.  Now it stands for, Fund It Again Taxpayers
