Here is a challenge for some of you younger guys and anybody else who wants to participate. I just sat down here and thought of 40 names of railroads that used to exist in the 1950's & 60's. Without any research or cheating of any kind see how many you can come up with then maybe we will figure out how to comopile a list to see which ones we forgot. Mike PS: how is my spelling this time Dad?

Pete, You are to be commended for your effort and time. It was a big project some dimwit started wasn't it. Since you have your books out. The Norfolk Southern purchased the right to use that name from the original Norfolk Southern. What did the original NS change their name to or were they already gobbled up or defunct except on paper? I promise to answer that later. Need to rest the stumps and wrists right now. If anyone knows of a RR I missed, add it to the list please. Pete

railroad name challenge

Mike, NS chartered as the Elizabeth City & Norfolk Railroad in 1870. With building and acquisitions it became the Norfolk Southern Railroad in 1883. It failed and went into receivership in 1889 and was reorganized as the Norfolk & Southern in 1891. Many mergers and growth, then the Depression and NS went into receivership again in 1932. Many of its subsidiaries were sold off in the ensuing years and the road was foreclosed in 1941. In 1942 the Norfolk Southern Railway was reorganized. In 1974, the Southern Railway purchased the Norfolk Southern and merged it with the Carolina & Northwestern under the NS name. In 1981 the name was changed again to Carolina & Northwestern so that the Norfolk Southern name could be used for the newly formed holding company as part of the Southern-Norfolk & Western merger. The Norfolk Southern "Thoroughbred" emblem gradually replaced those of N&W and Southern on rolling stock. At the end of 1990 the Norfolk & Western Railway became a subsidiary of the Southern Railway, and the Southern Railway changed its name to Norfolk Southern Railway. There is a lot more Mike. This is just a quick synopsis. Did I answer the question? Pete

Pete, Saw a special on the history channel this morning about New York's Grand Central Station. Some early photographs shown had the name New York Central & Hartford on the side of the building along with New York & Harlem. I saw the New York & Harlem in your list but do not see the NYC&H??? Mike

Don't know what to say Mike. I checked all my books again and there is no mention of the NYC&H. I have no info on it. Pete

I just did a thorough Google search and can find no reference to NYC & Hartford. Everything with Hartford in it has New Haven too. I've hit a dead end. Sorry. Pete

Certainly not doubting you or your efforts FL. Just saw it on the corner of the building in big letters and had never heard of it either so I checked your list of "N's" and didn't find it. Now I'm going to have to write the History channel!!! Mike

Do that Mike and let's find out what we need to know. You know NYC went through so many mergers and acquisitions that it would make your head swim. Maybe this building was caught in the throws of being painted with a new name when it changed again. I'm really curious now. If you can get info from the history channel, great. FL

Pete, I believe both names I mentioned were on the original station built by Vanderbuilt around 1913. Believe this was the station they were showing when I noticed the names. I'll see what I can find out. Mike

Pete, Joined a History Channel discussion group last night and asked for help on this subject. This morning a nice guy had provided me with a link to click on. The link was for a list of pictures available from the Early Town of Lenox( NY I assume)and to check 18 lines down. When I did there was a title for a picture of the New York Central & Hartford railroad station which in turn took me to a photo of an old postcard showing the station for The N Y Central & H R R, Canastota, N Y. Guess I wasn't dreaming or seeing things after all. Mike
