Here is a challenge for some of you younger guys and anybody else who wants to participate. I just sat down here and thought of 40 names of railroads that used to exist in the 1950's & 60's. Without any research or cheating of any kind see how many you can come up with then maybe we will figure out how to comopile a list to see which ones we forgot. Mike PS: how is my spelling this time Dad?

I'm afraid I won't be of much help. I'm not a very knowledgeable train history buff, but I'll be interested in what the rest of you come up with. Do you mean railroads that were around in the 50's & 60's but are no longer? I only know Toronto, Hamilton, & Buffalo! Canada Southern still has one small line out of Windsor and Algoma Central still runs tourist trains. Sorry, I lose. Good Luck guys! Fred - the jingoistic Canadian

Any railroad that was around then but wasn't thinking of real small shortline types but if you want to count them that'sa fine with me. They can either be defunct or still around either with original name (UP) or with another name (ATSF/BNSF) I'm up to 45 now. Mike Breezy - everybody knows comopile is a pile of como. Or it is when your piles are in remission (like a comma/como)

U.S. and of course Canadien/Canadian (depending on which side of the car you're standing). This is just for fun as we have no prizes like group #1. Pete, you fathered us all when you became the head cow of this group. Besides, a hungry calf will suckle any teet. Mike

Mike, You realize that you have an unfair advantage having actually worked for the RR all those years. For you it was daily knowledge. We shall try to keep up with you and I'm still counting but not up to your 40 yet. I'm working on it though. Question with reference to your #9 post. How can I be a head cow if I fathered the group? Flunked biology 101 did we? Marc, Everyone likes a little. No one likes a smart...... Pete

I flunked spelling and biology but excelled at sandbox and s_x education. I realise that I probably have a slight advantage with the names due to my background. That is why I started this thread. Not because I had the advantage, but to point out how many RR's (names at least) have gone by the wayside in one way or the other. How can a new model railroader chose a road to model if he never heard of it? In the early and mid 70's the N&W interchanged with 13 different railroads in Kansas City every day. Think of the operating and layout design possibilities with just that! If you never knew about it how could you think of building it? Mike ps I'm up to 52 now with NO research. Let me know when enough is enough and I'll type a list of the names.

Confession time! In response to my own posting (#10) I was "Margarita-ed" at the time! See, I failed to score Jimmy Buffett tix this year. He was "in town" last night. SO, me and the missus had a little "Jimmy Buffet Parrothead Party" on our deck......so I was a little "woo-woo" and just being a wise guy........as I am well know for being. I don't even remember the "Oh Canada" tag...where did THAT come from I wonder?!? Mr. Breeze

Oh, and I can only name about twenty RRs! I was never a real 1:1 rail fan, just models mostly. Marc

Mike, If you want to take the time to list all the fallen flags you can come up with that would be great. However, that is a lot of work when one can just look it up in several published books. I am at a loss to come close to your total without seeking book help. However, if you really want to do it, and your fingers can take it, we would all love to see the list. Alphabetical of course. That way it will be easier for us to find and or add to it. You game? Pete
