Progress report #2

I locked the other thread. There is some good stuff in there that probably has been reposted in other threads. I'll check. In the meantime, here's another place to write. B-)

Well, no. Actually I don't have any rolling stock or motive power in On30 for the Gorre & Daphetid. But, I do have a support column in the middle of the layout to disguise....so why not? I'll try to load up some pictures when it is finished. B-)

Progress report #2

Aside from being busy with a lot of stuff somehow... I have been distacted temporally from my streetcars and Narrows Park by coming up with a measured drawing of Helmstetter's barn: I have been using my photos from before the barn burned, and guessing at the interior framing. I even developed a bit of fancy spreadsheet calcualtions to help adjust measurements from a photograph to take out perspective effects. I must be about 33% to 50% done with the drawing: http://cid-e11b13ec6107fb9b.office.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/Railroad/Western%20Maryland%20Railway/...^4s%20Curve%20and%20Farm/Original%20Helmstetter%20Barn%20v0-3%20color.skp This is in Google SketchUp. All the best, Charles

Which track plan?? http://witt-family.com/gorre-and-daphetid/G&D_Files.htm Use the above link and go to the August 1967 MR link that says 45 Minutes at Eagle's Nest, pg.1 and pg.2. Also this link will take you to a look at the backside of Eagle's Nest from the April 1961 issue of RMC: http://witt-family.com/gorre-and-daphetid/RMC-19710400-023-300_70.jpg -- Edited by ginzokid at 08/09/2010 4:28 AM PDT -- Edited by ginzokid at 08/09/2010 4:33 AM PDT

I have been casting rocks and more rocks. I think I'll end up going through 10 containers of plaster by the time I finish. All this for the eagle's nest. Also have been busy at my buddy George's layout. The walls and ceilings are finished. The lights are in and we have the backdrop installed. George used that rolled aluminum system as seen in MR months ago. It was heavy but slick. No seams and automatic curved corners. George is a real artist and the backdrop will look fantastic when finished. My job will be the bullet-proof track laying and wiring for DCC. We have found out that as carpenters we make great plumbers!!!!!!:^O -- Edited by ginzokid at 08/27/2010 4:15 AM PDT

Here's the first look at Eagle's Nest. I have to color the rocks today and then build decks and support columns to hold up the building. There will also be an operating lift basket to get the customers up to the top. I tried to post more than one picture but I have no more room. Guess I'll have to delete something. By the way, the building was constructed in half on the workbench and then put together around the post up there at the ceiling. It has lights in it too. ]:) -- Edited by ginzokid at 09/12/2010 5:22 AM PDT

Well as usual ebay has messed up again. It says I have used all my photo storage space. With two small photos? So dear friends I cannot post the colored up picture of the rocks. Sorry. X-(

It could be interesting to have an elevator too, but just as a series of windows that light as the elevator travels up and down, like some cartoons 😛 . Cool looking mountain-y elevated house like thing! Happy trains, Charles

I have the deck built and installed and also the A-frame hoist for the elevator basket. I'm still deciding if I want to motorize the thing or do it by hand crank. Pictures later.... B-)

I am almost done enough with my Helmstetter's Barn drawing in SketchUp that I can continue with my streetcars and Narrows Park. Posted a photo in my album of an N scale paper cut and paste from a scale printing from SketchUp. That was fun to put together and see the progress the wife and one of my sons were impressed and liked it. (I have spent a lot of time measuring photos and drawing this bugger up to a reasonable level of detail.) All the best, Charles PS, the drawing and photos should all be available here for download too: Original Helmstetter Barn v0-6 color DSC_0419

I've been getting the evil eye from my RR layout so I'm heading out the door to pick some things up for supper and make a stop at Home Despot to get couple sticks of lumber and start on my helix tomorrow. I want to run trains soon.

Built my frame for the loop and helix. Hope to heck I'm doing the right thing. (2 stub ended yards- point to point plus an upper level (for powder river basin) with a reverse loop.

Dave, you surely know the old saying, if it feels right do it, you'll be right. ]:) Over a year spent looking over track plans and coming up with something. Started a couple dominoes back in nova scotia. 5 and half years living here with whatever built to date. Too much time and money put in to be tearing out and restarting. With the current setup I have a chance at finishing the trackwork and running trains -- Edited by dl85vette at 12/16/2010 7:43 AM PST

I'm at the same point. All track is laid and operational but I have a duck under that I wish I could take out. That would mean destroying the whole track plan. Not going to do it. I'll just hope to stay limber enough to duck. ;-)
