Progress report #2

I locked the other thread. There is some good stuff in there that probably has been reposted in other threads. I'll check. In the meantime, here's another place to write. B-)

Progress report #2

My electrical reconstruction has begun. gluing up some strips of wood to the underside of layout so I can screw the terminal boards to, and glueing some smaller wood pieces for cable clamps. Also drilled some new holes for cable routing. Tomorrow afternoon I should be able to fly along better.

The GP60M is almost finished and the GP60B is well under construction, shame to lose a Cotton Belt engine but the B unit should work really well, I hope, more pics to come soon. ]:)

Progress report #2

Yesterday I "lost" four hours. Somehow I went into the basement and finished Saulena's, then I upgraded a 2-8-0 with a new chip to add more features, then I actually fixed another 2-8-0 that wasn't running right, then I ran a couple of trains around the layout. All of a sudden Kimmers appeared with my before dinner cocktail. Wow! Where did the time go? Check out the drunks on the sidewalk....... B-)

Progress report #2

I got me new control panel built and terminal boards installed with some of the wiring. Need 4 more fuse holders and then I can finish the wiring. Need some brackets of sort to install the DCC command base. Also got some wiring underneath run and clamped. So much better looking and less confusing. I won't be putting any kind of circuit for the program track. I will have a section of track mounted on wood that will have jumper wires that I can connect to the terminal boards as the program track isn't used once your locos are set up.

I'm a maniac! Today I took apart the shay and climax and discovered that there was no grease at all in the gearbox of either loco. Wow! No wonder they were running funny! So I lubed them up and oiled them too and do they both ever run smooooooooooothly now! Now what shall I do next? Dave, you must be the one in the middle that is falling down.........]:)

Progress report #2

Yesterday I tried to figure out a simple way to light the cars from track power for the tree train. I tried battery power, but those AA batteries in the cars became just too heavy for the loco to pull up that steep 4% grade I have. (Maybe I'll have to try that Bullfrog Snot too.) So I found some Tomar track sliders that were in my parts bin. I always have a supply of 14V grain of wheat bulbs on hand for building lighting, so all I needed was wire. Done! The process was simple actually. I drilled and tapped a 00-90 sized hole in the Tomar brass slider and the truck cross member, then screwed the slider to the truck, soldered a small wire to the slider and threaded it up through the hole I had drilled in the car floor. Inside I just twisted and taped the connection from one side of the lamp to the wire lead. (This way I can replace the lamp easily if it burns out.) I repeated the process for the second truck, keeping the slider on the opposite side to slide on both rails. I was pleased when it worked so well and will do the rest of the cars today. This method adds very little weight to the cars and should work well. I have decided to just tackle one project at a time. My usual problem is that I have four or five projects going at the same time. I did this to prevent boredom with just one thing, but now that I'm a little older (hee, hee 😄 ) I find it better to do one thing at a time. I was feeling overwhelmed with so much to do. Now I'm just picking at it one step at a time. Maybe this will work for a while. That's enough soul searching for one day. :) B-)

I usually have about 10 things on the go at any one time but don't worry about finishing them all at once, I usually pick one out of the lot, finish that then move on to the next thing that grabs me, I know I should concentrate on one at a time but it is what I am used to from being in auto shops for years, you work on what you have the parts for at the time, same with the trains, I some times work out a better way to do a particular project while I'm working on something else, makes sence to me anyway. ]:) As I said....I'm getting old and can only do one thing at a time any more.....but I try do do it well. I'm bad like Barry for umpteen things. I use little rubber maid plastic containers to put each project into. I need to do some loco work as I have 5 locos torn apart in various stages of custom work (decoders, primer,paint,etc..) I think I need to start focusing on on item and finish it and move on. Oh wait, what started off as redo a section of layout, turned into a complete rewire of Main DCC bus wires. Still working on my control panel. Almost done of the 99% that I want to complete.

I've rebuilt and repainted one of my F45s at least three times, it has been on the spine car train for about three months but it still doesn't have any of the grabs, handrails or steps on it, the headlight works on it though the other F45 has all the details but no headlight yet and been finished for well over a year, the GP60M is so close to finished but now the GP60B may well beat it to the finish line LOL I only have to decal it but still NEED the red numbers, I didn't realise they had different coloured numbers until I found a really clear photo on Google. ]:)

Progress report #2

Progress on railroad, ZERO in last 4 or 5 months. I just did not have the energy but did have some time. So as luck would have it about 2-3 weeks ago I ended up in the hospital with pneumonia. They then had my heart monitored and ran a nuclear stress test and found out why I have no energy. I have a blocked artery in my heart and will have a procedure tomorrow to clear it. If everything goes as planned I should be back home tomorrow night. I am using a weeks vacation to recover and will try to use some of the time off to get back to working on the railroad and be more active in the group as well. Lou PS This was edited by my boss or best half.

The GP60M is finished and looking good even if I say so myself, the GP60B is painted and running, again looks good but I do need more brass wire to be able to make the hand rails for the sides, my F45 that I have painted so many times is once more stripped and waiting for paint again, I really think the reason it was never finished was the yellow has always been wrong, Microscale recommends scalecoat TT yellow, I have found some so I will try that and hopefully it will get finished this time, maybe it will just have to do LOL ]:) -- Edited by barrysfp45 at 05/17/2009 4:18 PM PDT
