Paypal and Ebay Spoofs

Careful everyone! There is a new round of spoofs appearing. The latest is a Paypal one telling you your credit card is about to expire and providing a link. We all know not to click on that right? Send it off to spoof@paypal so it can be traced. B-)

I was hit with another Paypal spoof this morning. This one says I paid for a laptop, which I didn't, and offers a link to dispute the sale. Careful everyone! B-)

Weird.Since I moved and am with Shaw cable, I haven't a single spoof. Shaw has viral stuff and filters/firewalls so I am sure some of that crap is blocked before reaching me.

Paypal and Ebay Spoofs

There is a problem on ebay that has people hijacking accounts, and posting fake auctions. It's usually for high end stuff with that "this never happens to me" really good buy it now price. The catch is, you have to send them an email, then they try to sell you the item off of ebay, with an ebay invoice. None of their email go through ebay. Be careful folks. CJ]:)

Here's the latest one that I got this morning: Titled or subject matter: "We invite you to join us as a Silver PowerSeller" Dear eBay Member, You've been on a super sales streak and since you've done so well, it's time to recognize you for your efforts. You are PowerSeller Silver! Congratulations! joining the eBay Silver PowerSeller Program. Come and join us. When you join the PowerSeller program, you'll be able to receive more of the support you'll need for continued success. So, why wait? ...blah blah blah... Then there are the customary blue links you can click on which I won't post here. Be Careful. Again, I only look at the ones that are in my messages on My Ebay

Here is what was written in this mornings paper about spoofs. The guy pleaded guilty, but what do you think he will get from the law? Taken from the Ottawa Citizen Newspaper 10 Nov 07 MAN PLEADS GUILTY IN PAYPAL "BOT" ATTACK A California man agreed to plead guilty to infecting as many as 250,000 personal computers with software used to steal users names ansd passwords for eBay Inc.'s PayPal online service. John Schiefer,26, of Los Angeles will admit to four felony counts, including accessing protected computers to conduct fraud, according to a statement yesterday by the attorney's office in Los Angeles. He faces as much as 60 years in prison and a fine of $1.75 million, according to the statement. Mr Schiefer is the first person to be charged under wiretapping law for operating a "Botnet", an army of computers compromised without the owners knowledge. End Quote: It's about time that they caught somebody working these spoofs. With the technology we have today they really should be able to catch a lot more. This was just a small blurb in our paper here and may not be followed up with the results of the court. If any of you see something further it would be interesting if you could post the results. Jack

I received another "survey" request from Paypal this morning. There was a link in it to go to the survey or another link to verify it's authenticity. OK. I tried that one just for kicks and it would not connect. I sent this off to spoof again and am waiting for a reply from Paypal. This one looked like it really might have come from Paypal, but I'm not sure. It was "customer satisfaction survey". Be careful at all time guys. B-)

Here is a very interesting but long link to what is happening to a lot of people who use paypal. Like I said it is a long read, but you can read some and then go back to it when you have time. After reading some of this for a short time it makes me wonder if I shouldn't cancel my account, the only problem is most of the sellers now will not accept anything but paypal. After seeing what some of these folks are wanting for their items and what they think shipping is worth, maybe its time to just purchase what I need from the local hobby shop and accept some of the high prices that some them charge. Jack, You can't cancel your Paypal account. You can only pay for auctions by Paypal any more. Money orders are illegal! So they say...... ]:)
