Grass for the layout

I went to a train show that a local club puts on every year and on one of the layouts I noticed a type of grass material I hadn't seen before. I asked a club member and he said it was called silflor and a vendor downstairs had sold it to the club. It turns out that this product was made by a person in Germany and came in a sheet and was expensive. He also told me it was available from Woodland Scenics but wouldn't sell to him at a dealer rate. I went to the site but couldn't find the product. I reasoned that maybe if I cut up some lichen that I happened to have it might work. I cut up the lichen very fine and put some elmers glue on the foam and it looks pretty close to the silflor product. Denser and more grass like than just shaking on the course foam that I have used in the past. Does anyone have any experience with silflor? Gene

Gene, There was an article recently in MR about the Silfor grass, you will have to research it yourself as I probably threw it out. Check "Scenic Express" on line for a supply of it. I personally do not like the "carpet" look to grass on layout. Note: I said personally. I would not use it. B-)

I use the little plastic fake grass that comes in the little Sushi kits I get at the super market! Mr. Breeze Seriously, getting into the scenery scene will be my next dither. You're my guide, Gene. Keep me posted. Marc

WS, blends of different grades of turf, grass, weeds, clump foliage. All of it. Lots of it. The more stuff the better. It's the only thing I can get up here. I thought about Astro Turf or industrial grade very short pile carpet or just using Prin's fuzz, or my own that falls out with regularity; but no. Prin rejected the shaving idea right off. I do like the super market plastic grass stuff though. It might look better in O scale than N, don't you think? A little sprinkle of WS medium grade turf onit and it might just do the trick. I'll research it and let you know. B-0

Thought I'd bump this up. Has anyone tried the new WS grass sheets that are moldable with a heat gun? B-)

I have a small sheet but never used it yet on the layout.

So use it somewhere and give us a report. I kind of want to know if it will work as an underlayment to give some color to the layout instead of al that zip-texturing I do now. Unfortunately, to try it here I have to mail order it as some expense as you know. B-)

it is somewhat fairly flexible and supposed to form quite well when heated.
