Building With WS Foam Risers

As I mentioned in the other group, I am going to build my new layout with Woodland Scenic foam risers. You can see in the pictures that I have posted that the open grid bench work, which you can't see, is covered with acoustic ceiling tiles. This gives me the flat surface I need without having to cut a lot of plywood sub-roadbed and risers. Not much fun as you probably already know, especially on the curved pieces. And all those risers to cut and the splices to make. The WS system has to be simpler. Now comes the fun. Figuring out how much and of what pieces I needed. Well, I have a lot of foam coming. The real fun was figuring out the inclined risers needed to allow the proper clearance at the overpasses. I am using two different slopes, the 2% and the 3%, to get up to the clearance I need. What I also had to do was combine several different thicknesses of riser plus incline to get to the proper height. As soon as I get started and take some pictures, I'll post my progress. Meanwhile, if anyone has questions about the WS foam system, ask away. I think I have a good handle on it. Pete

CJ your solution seems too easy. It still would just be a oval with no grade but I guess I could just get several pieces of 2% grade risers and use several to go up to a bridge and then several to go down to the 3" track in the two places I will need to go over the lower track. Humm.

Punk, I have no idea about Pete's "little cod-piece", he has never show it to me.(thank goodness) It can't be pretty. But, knowing him, it is probably bigger. He lives in Newfy and Newfy is sort of like Texas, all things are bigger. Bill

Gene, Did you really read what I wrote? You skipped right over it. How about you use the "email moderators" link on the left side and send me your phone number and a good time to call you this weekend, specify your time zone please. This needs a question and answer session "mano Y mano". I'm serious. I have a great calling plan and would be willing to do it. We don't seem to be on the same track here and I really want to help you. Pete

Gene Not sure if this will help, but try this web site and maybe it can help (www.awrr.com/scalecharts.html). Just trying to be helpful as it has helped with a few issues that I have had. Like converting to n-scale to know exactly the size of Pete's cod fish. Lou hoping that this helped.

Pete, My schedule this weekend will be very hectic. I now have the pleasure of the company of my two grandchildren My daughter who has a very hard time carrying children and happens to be having pains as I type and she is 5 months into this third child and she and her other half need to have some time out. Oh boy!!! I also am in the middle of watching our new house go up. The hole is dug and in two days they have built the basement 12 courses high. Just amazes me how much work has been done in such a short amount of time. Another thing, we have to get this house ready to put on the market. If you are not busy and are looking for a nice little trip stateside... Any way I have read what you wrote. I tried to draw my layout in my word program via the draw tools but that did not work. Picture a semi oval going from front to back 4'X4' flat and on LL power loc track. Now picture a figure eight track going from the left of the oval to right over the oval track. Now the figure eight track is really in the shape of a peanut and does not truely chris cross. As the kids say are you feelin me so far? All I think I need to do is Like CJ said use two inch plus one inch risers all the way around and where the upper track cross over the lower track in two places add enough 2%foam inclines to go up to the bridge crossing around a curve and then down a 2% decline to the three inch risers. send me your e-mail and I'll scan a drawing and try to send it to you. Gene

Gene, I get more confused everytime I read another description. After the last description I am picturing two seperate ovals that are not connected in any way. One just happens to be a little higher then the other and along the route the higher one curves over the lower one a couple of times. One train operates on the upper route and one train on the lower route. Is this correct? Mike Good luck this weekend and hope your daughter carries full term with no problems

I'll do that Gene as I am always curious as to what other folks are doing. Pete - couldn't Gene have just scanned his drawing then post it in a photo album then everybody could look first hand at what he is trying to do? Mike

Mike, everyone but me as I only get the dreaded red X and can get no further in the photo album section. But then it is my attempt at a layout so I should know it without any photo album.. Maybe Pete will put it into an album along with his drawing which is pretty close to what I am trying to do. Pete has much better drawing capabilities than I do that is for sure!. Gene

Lou, That is an interesting web site. I don't know right now how I would use the info there but someday it probably will hit me. Gene

Gene, Are you using Zone Alarm or Norton Internet Security? These two programs block your photos. You have to disable either one to get rid of the red "X". This is according to eBay. The only other suggestion I have for you if you are not using these two programs, is to lower your "Privacy" setting or your "cookie" rejection in tne Internet Tools section down to Low just while you are in the group. I have to do that to invite and/or approve new members. Strange, but otherwise I leave that setting at "medium". Just a thought here. Pete

Pete, I very infrequently can get to see the pics without doing anything. I have Norton security and antivirus.I've turned them off and it didn't seem to matter. I've even turned off the computer and turned it back on and still no pics. I will try the privacy setting in internet tools and see if that works. Gene

We think we have a solution for Gene. Although the sketch shown here uses WS risers and inclines, the better solution may be to just use a flat 2" foam board over the base layer and cut out the "ravine" where the lower level goes through. Gene even though of using an additional 1" piece on top to get 3" difference. This system would provide two flat surfaces, one at 0" and one at +3" to build on. Any lakes or depressions could be cut into the 2" or more layers could be added to build that hill. Hopefully this will give Gene what he wants and he does not need to buy all that WS stuff unless he wants to have a incline or two somewhere. Pete

When someone has a question about track or a layout issue it is hard for the readers to figure out what the writer is saying sometimes. A simple drawing like the one in #29 really helps. Maybe we should all look at doing something like this. Mike
