I've installed the eBay app on a new Android device but when I click on links to the eBay site they load in the browser rather than launching the app. I've checked the default app settings for Android and compared them with my primary device and they appear to be identical.
What could be wrong?

If you want browser links to open in the eBay app:
If you have an Android device (aside from a Chromebook), then using the device manager, under Settings: Apps: eBay: Open by default -- there is a setting called "Open supported links" holding that down gives three choices: "Open in this app" "Ask every time" and "Don't open in this app". Choose "Open in this app".
If you have a Chromebook, open Chromebook Settings, scroll down to Google Play Store and select it. Select "Manage Android Preferences". From there the above instructions should work -- go to Apps: eBay: Open by default: Open supported links: "Open in this app". Then back out of the settings and you should be all set. Or else, open Chromebook Settings, and select Apps. Select "Manage your Apps". From there go to eBay: More Settings: Advanced: Open by default: Open supported links: "Open in this app".

Thanks for posting. Can you let us know what pages or links you are trying to get into the app with? Are you clicking links from email? google search results?
Thanks

Ah, good point. I hadn't noticed before that links from Google search results seem to be working (now) but not from e-mails. I didn't think that any links were working initially but I have been setting and resetting the default apps configuration and have cleared the app cache and app data.

Yes, I've done that, thanks!

Just to clarify, I am using a Samsung Galaxy S7 edge duos running Android 8.0.0 with eBay app 6.2.0.11.
