Sword ID Help Requested - D 1871 P.M.A.

Hello all,

This is driving me nuts, I have looked everywhere I can find, and no luck on pinning this down. I am leaning towards a French cavalry or infantry (Chaussers de Afrique ?) model (or American?).

Specs: 4 branches, 2 fullers, plain pommel, rounded grip. Total length 28", blade 23".

Markings: "1871" and "D" etched/engraved on one side. Also: (hard to see this) above the "D" is stamped "5. N." However, it is stamped in reverse, so to read it correctly requires a mirror.  "P.M.A." stamped on the other side.

Thank you most kindly for any insight anyone can offer.

Shawn
