Easier order management. New user-friendly order numbers now follow transactions through their entire life cycles so you can efficiently track and manage your orders from order initiation to payout.

I find the new order numbers to be confusing. Previously with the record number it was easy to tell what month/week I should look at to find the order. With the new order numbers the sequence appears to be random.

The first 2 digits are all over the place. The middle 5 digits are in sequential order, so I've been trying to use that as a reference. The last 5 digits are again all over the place.

How are these order numbers determined?

It is my understanding that the old order numbering could be decoded to extract elements of the transaction. Developers have been warned that the new order numbering scheme will have no usable decoding format, and that the numbers are to be treated as a whole string that could change in length.  From what you explained, there may still be some internal format, but eBay is not telling.

It appears to be more eBay-friendly (internal benefit) vs user-friendly (seller benefit).

One is tempted to ask "so what's new?" lol
Reality is the leading cause of stress.
