Authentication

Hi. I recently sold an authentic Tiffany necklace. However, the eBay authenticating process could not determine it to be authentic through their authentication process.  I asked for a secondary review and offered to provide authenticity documents and was shut down on both offers. This is very backwards and there is zero consideration of present authentication,  whatsoever, which makes this whole authentication process a total flaw.  Perhaps you can engage more capable authenticators to keep your business going.

Re: Authentication

If you'll check the old threads, you'll see that this is an ongoing problem.  I can't understand why eBay hasn't fixed this by now.  Everyone loses with the system the way it is.  A system designed to protect the consumer has in your case harmed the consumer by preventing him or her from buying an authentic item, presumably at a great price.

GIA are experts at gemstone identification and diamond grading.  But auction houses and the like don't go to them for authenticating whether or not a designer item is counterfeit.  If they can look at an item and clearly determine that the quality indicates an item is not authentic, then fine reject the sale.  But they shouldn't reject it simply because an item looks authentic...but they can't verify it.  When you have supporting paperwork like receipts, the system is even more dysfunctional.

If the sale went through, the buyer, the seller, and eBay are all happy.  When a legitimate sale is blocked, no one is happy.  They need to fix this problem!

Re: Authentication

This is just happened to me - I'm devastated. An authentic Hermes Evelyne and they said they couldn't authenticate it and I have to refund the money. Not that it was fake...just because!! It's *bleep* outrageous that they get away with this. It has the receipt and everything else that goes along with the bag. I am furious!

Re: Authentication

The ridiculous thing about it is that eBay also loses when the sale doesn't go through.  Not only do they lose the sale, but they also likely lose a customer who then decides buying jewelry on eBay is too screwed up to bother with.  It's totally a dysfunctional family kind of a thing.

I wonder what would happen if some overzealous lawyer selling an authentic piece of jewelry that was blocked went after eBay and GIA for it.  I mean they really are screwing honest sellers.  Essentially this is the same as if they blocked the sale of every Martin or Gibson guitar because they couldn't authenticate it.

Also, please know I don't have any skin in this particular battle...my listings are all non-designer pieces.

This hasn't included fine jewelry yet, but the first of the year this authentication process will be rolling out other categories.

This should be a welcome relief for both buyers and sellers.

Re: Authentication

this whole process of "authenticating" is awful. the sports cards being "authenticated" already have a stamp from the manufacturer, but "i GuEsS iT cAn Be FaKeD".

now, the card is in transit longer, susceptible to theft and damage for a longer period of time.

ebay has also given my contact info to a third party company who I hope will keep it secure, for a "service" I never asked for nor wanted, and does absolutely nothing for me.

make no mistake, the guise of "safety for buyer and seller" is ONLY for ebay's protection. period.

Re: Authentication

The process is so screwed up and unreliable that I no longer invest in anything that might be selected for authentication. Less $ for me AND eBay. Utterly counterproductive!

Re: Authentication

You can circumvent the authentication process by checking off the “customized” section with “yes”.

Re: Authentication

So THAT'S why a couple of my listings mysteriously are not covered by the authentication!  So far all of mine have passed (sometimes after a big delay), but that's good to know just in case!
