Puppy Dog Barrette? Seems Complicated-Thoughts/Ideas Appreciated!

Small, measures 1/2" by 1 3/4". I always thought it was a barrette, but each prong(?) has to be hooked tightly into the clasps-which would be hard to do. There's also an old piece of what looks like masking tape in the middle; though there doesn't seem to be a need to repair-but I don't want to mess it up by trying to remove it. Thanks for looking/help!

You were right, it is a barrett. We use to wear them when I was a child. It was made for mom to put in and the child not to be able to easily remove and loose.

LOL  I must be more tired than I thought..I read your title & was thinking a barrette FOR a puppy dog...say what????

Ive sold dozens of those style.  Ive heard they are a pill to put on but they hold well. Most of mine were Navaho silver with turquoise or coral so it may be worth checking for gold (at least plating).

Thanks for replies-I actually found one new on card that sold where every other puppy was painted blue. The card was Nemo brand-not sure if connected with LN, but I didn't use it in add since the barrette wasn't marked itself. Most likely brass, though gold would have been nice I have fine hair and would have hated trying to take this out as a kid! Would be nice and painless for a doll though.
