Fine Jewelry vs. Fashion Jewelry

So, I've received a notice or 2 now that my listings don't conform because I have fashion jewelry listed in fine jewelry, due to the fact the gemstones aren't considered "fine".  I understand this policy is years old already, and I understand this is eBay's "sandbox", but this makes no sense to have 100% precious metal jewelry have to be mixed in with 99 cent Claire's costume, all due to a variation of gemstone.

All the jewelers and collectors I know agree that fine jewelry means 100% precious metal, first and foremost.  Retail stores and manufacturers agree, too.

I can have a Ross Simons Sterling Silver ring or Imperial Gold brand 14K bracelet, all solid metal, no stones, listed OK in Fine, but the minute CZs are added, it's considered Fashion, mixed in with all the cheap, garbage costume??

That isn't fair or make any sense at all.

Same for high end designers like Tacori, Kay Jewelers and Diamonique.  They all use CZs set in Sterling Silver, 10K and 14K gold.  But now these example of brands have to be mixed in with inexpensive costume??

Couldn't eBay just create a separate category for Fine Jewelry with Gemstones / Diamonds, like they used to do, instead of shrinking it down to this very vague and generalized Fine Jewelry segment??

I hear ya, dads. 😔

Unfortunately, you`re banging your head against a brick wall.

We can all scream & shout against the idiocy of it all..won`t do a bit of good.

Gone are the good old days for any of it..Ebay 'got above their raisin' so to speak.

You are preaching to the choir.  I can't tell you the amount of nashing of teeth when this policy was rolled out.  It was stupid when it was rolled out and it is still stupid.  Not to mention when they combined fashion and fine item specifics.  Makes listing twice as long and twice as difficult.

Re: Fine Jewelry vs. Fashion Jewelry

To further muddy the waters, ebay's fine jewelry listing policy reads:

  1. Fine metals (such as gold, silver, and platinum) must be listed in the Fine Jewelry category.
  2. Main stones must also be made from fine materials.
  3. Secondary stones can include either fine or fashion materials.

So if you're selling a ring with a center diamond surrounded by CZ's, you can list in the fine jewelry category, but if the main stone is a CZ surrounded by diamonds, into the fashion jewelry category it goes. Make it make sense!

Re: Fine Jewelry vs. Fashion Jewelry

My peeve was solid 14K ring with a natural colorless topaz.  The slightest hint of any color in the topaz is a fine jewelry gem, but colorless is fashion.  Natural, earth mined colorless topaz = fashion; but also, the same gemstone irradiated to turn it blue = fine jewelry.  Alchemy!

Re: Fine Jewelry vs. Fashion Jewelry

Most jewelry sellers have been cursing eBay's name for this since it started.  Do they care???    Do they care that they've chased off jewelry sellers who threw up their hands after nearly throwing up one time too many?  Are they actually going to fix what they broke?  Ya gotta ask?    They seem to have finally, sort of, gotten the message about customer disservice now that they've chased off one seller too many.

Hit us in the wallet: they don't care. Hit them in the profit margin: first whack your sellers some more, and if that doesn't work then they care.

Re: Fine Jewelry vs. Fashion Jewelry

As sad as it is for individual ma and pa sellers, what eBay is doing is working just fine for them as a corporation.  Second quarter results for 2024...that's a three month time frame...was:

Revenue = $2.57 billion

Net Income = $226 million

Earnings per share = +40% versus same quarter in 2023

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
