Hi All,
Hope I am asking in the right group -
A person who lived 40 years in her apartment here in NYC left a massive amount of furniture, paintings, mirrors and lamps behind all of which I and others recognize pretty much to be 60s-ish & 70s-ish decor.
There was a floor lamp with metal tray table that I took but boy, does it need restoration. The wiring is good; the two sockets work. Structurally, it is sound with no dents, bends or loose parts that I found. But what in the world is all that discoloring that looks like mold? I thoroughly cleaned the metal and a rag will run clean against it now but all those spots really do look like the lamp caught smallpox. I don't know how else to describe it.
What are those spots all over the metal base, stem, tray and area near the sockets? Also, what does that grated thing do on the top? There was a lampshade that was with it but it was in deplorable condition, ripped and very soiled and stained. I threw it out.
Very importantly, will someone please help me to date the lamp? I'm thinking 50s or even 40s but defer to the experts I hope to find here.
TIA.

I think the style is considered a toleware lamp. We had a similar one when I was growing up in the 60's. It was black and gold and the shade was also metal to match.

all the spots are oxidation ad will not wash off
you may be able to brighten the base with the toning with some MR Clean but the spots are actually little craters or puckers similar to an oxidized watch dial..
the tray part in the middle should clean up half decently
the pierced edge of the tray has many entry points for oxygen to react with the metal and paint
the white fuzz on the lamp holders or bulb sockets also is typical oxidation
