I purchased a Gucci pocket book last year that should have been authenticated. A year later my strap to my purse needs repairs and Gucci is asking for proof of purchase for this item which I don't have which may not allow me to get the repairs..what do I do.

Assuming you purchased it from eBay and it was certified as authentic, it should have had an nfc tag when you bought it. After a year, normal bags would be damaged from wear and use, and Gucci is no exception. Fortunately, Gucci has a 2 year warranty for their bags, according to their website. If you did buy this item from eBay and it is authentic, you should have a receipt in your eBay purchase history. That is all you can do to show at Gucci. Really, I’m sure Gucci will check thoroughly the item to see if it is authentic. If they don’t accept eBay receipts then sorry about that.

If the bag you bought didn’t have an authenticity guarantee badge in the top right corner in the product listing, and wasn’t certified by eBay, then your bag was never certified. eBay certified listings have more in depth detail and special signs it has been certified and the certification process.

You should have a proof of purchase at Paypal.

Gucci doesn’t honor a reseller receipt as proof of purchase. Proof of purchase is the original receipt from retail purchases. Gucci won’t even honor receipts from the defunct employee online store for Kering employees. It must have been purchased at Gucci/Gucci Outlet or any of their authorized retail vendors.
Buyers buying on eBay far below retail who are expecting a retail experience are the bane of existence on reselling platforms. She can send the bag to Rago brothers or Bidos Leatherworks.
What’s scary is that these same type of buyers are opening and winning chargebacks for all sorts of minutia.

Just use a competent leather repair and if you resell use a professional authenticator like authenticat4u. Everyone who buys secondary market pretty much deals with the same issues as very few luxury houses will work on product not bought by the current owner. There are exceptions. I’ve had Hermes repair bags and both were bought secondary market. I believe Vuitton will also do repairs although they will not repair licensed product and may even call authentic licensed product fake.

Items received as gifts don't necessarily come with receipts. Does that mean Gucci won't do work on a gift if the giftee doesn't have the original receipt?

No they won’t. You can ask for gift receipts that you can pack with the bag if you are buying as a gift.
