FYI, a seemingly "correct" serial number doesn't mean that the bag it's on is authentic. So calling Coach and reading a serial number doesn't mean that they can verify or deny authenticity.
Some fakes are serial numbers that don't match the style of bag they're on. Other fakes have full serials that appear correct for the bag but the bag is fake.
Even going into a Coach store to ask about authenticity can get you inaccurate information. SAs are trained to sell current items. Most employees weren't even born when some vintage and classic bags were made and other styles may have been discontinued years before they were hired to work at Coach.
The pictures posted by @yhlml do show an authentic file bag.

The serial number is at the bottom of the tag and contains a minimum of 4 letters and 4 numbers. Call Coach customer service at 1 (904) 741-3090 and give the representative your serial number. All authentic coach bags are registered with the company in their database and the rep will be able to verify the bag’s authenticity.
Coach bags are no longer made in New York. Instead, they are crafted by specialists in Cambodia, Vietnam, and the Philippines.

I don't think Coach authenticates, on the phone or in the store. I've been coming here for at least 10 years to check my bags. How can they tell just by the number without looking at the bag? What if it is a good number on a fake bag?

You could search for a local store near you, unless like me you like where there are none.....😀

Since 1994, Coach's serial numbers have not been unique and even prior to 1994 when unique serial numbers were used, there was (nor is) a database where they're registered.
As for verifying authenticity, no authenticator worth his salt (of any brand or item) verifies anything without (at least) clear and definitive pictures and often, in some cases, they need to have the items in hand (because fakes have gotten so close).

Cambodia, Vietnam, and the Philippines are the more recent additions to where Coach items are made. There are at least 8 other countries with factories making Coach. (And there are many more making fakes.)
