Why is the shipping in the hundreds?

I am new to buying things here, I found an item I would like to bid on but when I look at the shipping, international shipping, its $240, I contacted the shipper and they told me this was decided by Ebay,  why is the shipping so ridiculously high?

What's the item @ricardo.-60 ?

If shipping through eBay International Shipping (eIS), that rate includes both the cost for the seller to ship to the eIS hub in the US, and eBay adds on the cost for international shipping from the hub to the buyer.

If the item is large and/or heavy, that can seriously balloon the rates for both the domestic and international legs of shipping.

If you post the item number I can take a look to give you a more specific answer, however the above general answer will pretty much cover it.

I have a lot of buyers from Mexico that use freight forwarders in Texas because consolidating their packages with the forwarder keeps the shipping costs down. The downside to that is having an item reshipped voids all of your eBay buyer protections, so if you go that route make sure you have some kind of coverage with the forwarder.

My post above explains it - the item is large and heavy. Even domestic shipping is expensive. eBay is adding on a hefty international ship cost and seller has no control over eBay International Shipping rates.

The carrier determines the shipping cost. It is based on size,  weight, and distance. Oversized packages have a higher billable weight.  Then eBay adds the seller's  handling charge.  Heavy oversized packages are expensive to ship.

Hello

The high international shipping cost you encountered may be due to eBay’s Global Shipping Program (GSP), which handles international orders. The shipping rates are often determined by factors such as the distance, package size, and delivery speed, and can be higher due to customs fees, taxes, and other logistics involved in international shipping. While sellers set the item price, eBay calculates the shipping fees based on these factors, which can sometimes result in higher-than-expected costs. It’s always a good idea to reach out to the seller for further clarification or consider other shipping options if available.

@kingred69 Did someone ask you to post this reply here, and tell you that you would be employed by eBay and eBay would pay you to post replies on this community? Have you also been asked to post product reviews? This is a scam, and they are setting you up to cheat you and steal from you. Very soon, you are going to be asked to pay the scammers, in order to be able to withdraw your "pay".

This is called a task-scam or an order-grabbing scam. Sometimes the fake company is "eBay Mall" sometimes it's something else. Either way, it's fake.

eBay doesn't pay people to make forum posts or product reviews, or "grab orders". Nor do any other companies. No legitimate company pays for fake product reviews, and they don't need (or pay) middlemen to do anything with their customer's orders.

If the scammers ask you to sign up for a cryptocurrency account, DON'T DO IT. Don't give them any (more) money. You won't get anything back.
