I bought cordless tool batteries with a five year warranty. They quit working. The seller did not respond to my messages. Now it has been over nine months so Ebay will not let me contact them for redress.

A warranty would usually be remedied by the manufacturer, if sold by one of their authorized dealers. Did you register back when you bought it for a warranty (with receipts, dates, serial no's etc.) or send in any purchase info?
If a seller offers a "warranty" and hopes you don't ask later (and then they don't answer), it's not a legitimate warranty. Were these batteries from China? Are they what comes with the real original product?
There is probably no legitimate guarantee after the ebay Buyer Protection plan which is 30 days. What it says in the listing is guff and that seller will ignore you. Sorry this happened.
*edit* also, I have to say, five years coverage on any rechargeable batteries is unheard-of.

There is no warranty on most items sold on ebay. Ebay covers you to receive it as described. After that, your on your own. For some items you can purchase a warranty. Don't know how good those are. You have to contact the company that made the batteries. However, many won't cover resold items and don't allow factory dealers to sell in venues like this.
