To my eye, the style is wrong for both the Esso / Exxon tiger and for Tony the Tiger. The stance and attitude are the same, but the blocky, squared-off, sharp-edged look is wrong for them. Maybe a sports team mascot...?

Yes, there's a good possibility of that. By the way, I see Tony had to audition for his role - who knew??
"The debut of Sugar Frosted Flakes cereal by Kellogg in 1951 called for four rotating spokes-animals including Katy the Kangaroo, Elmo the Elephant, Newt the Gnu, and Tony the Tiger."

Some of my good health now is attributable to poverty in my youth. Could never afford the fancy sugar-frosted, rainbow-hued, chocolate-coated, artificial-fruit-flavored stuf. We bought oatmeal for hot cereal and Cheerios for cold cereal, and that was it.

Fun Fact: The guy that belted out "They're gr-r-r-eat!" is the same voice actor that sang "You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch" in the animated TV special. Thurl Ravenscroft was the voice of Tony for over 50 years!
Also, Tony's Wiki page states that he is married and has two kids, Tony Jr. and Antoinette.

Could you show us what the picture on (including any labels, if it's an item of clothing)? That might help us narrow down the date at least, and tell us whether it was aimed at children, etc.

It's on an adult-sized ringer t-shirt, probably late 80s-early 90s. Maybe it is a sports team since it's on a Soffe brand ringer?
