My suspicions were right - they're not silverplate. I had a look on some Russian sites and these salt cellars are actually made from melchior, which is an alloy of copper and nickel.

"Nickel gives melchior, unlike brass and bronze, a silver color, and that property, combined with its high corrosion resistance, made it popular for the manufacture of household utensils in the Soviet Union."

Try a google image search for: 'salt cellar' and 'hommet'.

Not saying 'NO' doesn't mean 'YES'.

The foolishness of one's actions or words is determined by the number of witnesses.

Perhaps if Brains were described as an APP, many people would use them more often.

Respect, like money, is only of 'worth' when it is earned - with all due respect, it can not be ordained, legislated or coerced. Anonymous

Good to see you back, Bill. Your photo is blurry, but looking at the others out there it'll be silverplate, not sterling. The stamp is the original Soviet-era selling price, in rubles and kopeks.
