If you consider it a sport to gather your food by drilling through 18
inches of ice and sitting there all day hoping that the food will swim by,
you might live in Michigan. Jeff Foxworthy.

Such a strange coincidence. I just stumbled upon this completely by accident while researching a different question:

So it is actually Mary Magdalen. It may well be that your reproduction and the Hungarian painting in the link both relate to a common Renaissance original, but a quick search hasn't brought it up.

The signature if there is one might be hiding beneath the frame.

Re: Who might be the artist? Mary Mother of Jesus.

You can check if the back of the canvas looks old or new. That might help a little.

Thank you very much. Indeed, such a coincidence.

This painting could be seen in the beginning of the movie Monsignor , 1982 American drama film directed by Frank Perry.

Re: Who might be the artist? Mary Mother of Jesus.

That is an interesting clue. Is it set in Rome? Do you have a screenshot of the scene in question?

Re: Who might be the artist? Mary Mother of Jesus.

I have just photo taken from TV screen. The painting is visible for a short time on the right side wall sometime at beginning of the movie.  It might be Vatican if the scene was shot on location.

Re: Who might be the artist? Mary Mother of Jesus.

I'll have another look over the next few days to see if I can track it down, or someone else may find it, so keep an eye on the thread. It should be possible with a bit of persistence.

Adaptation of Guido Reni? There are some similarities.

Not similar enough, to my mind. I did try to track it down using Italian keywords, but drew a blank. The Hungarian artist lived in Rome for a period, so it would make sense for his painting to be a copy of something hanging in a Roman church. But of course, there is a lot of art in Rome. And a lot of churches! So apologies for suggesting this was going to be an easier task than it has proved to be.
