I have an entire dinner set with this pattern and makers mark. It was inherited from my Great Grandmother, and I’m not young. I suspect from around 1910, and hand painted. I know the ‘torii’ mark. But cannot find out what the additional markings might be. Anyone with great wisdom to share?

Well, those are quite cheery, aren't they? I'd say the SMS is the importer. Maybe a department store or some other beg retailer. Then, as now, with a big enough order, you can get your own stamp on the bottom.
If you check sites like these, that show a lot of importers; marks on Japanese pottery and porcelain, you might find a match.

Sorry I can't be of more help. If you don't get an answer here, try the Pottery, Glass & Porcelain board, too:

No wisdom from me, just internet knowledge. But I think the fact it is marked "Made in Japan" rather than "Nippon" may indicate a post-1921 date:

Probably made after world war II.
