Identifying a vintage basket

I found this basket at a thrift store and fell in love with it!! The problem is I have absolutely no idea what it was used for. As you can see it is extremely large and in excellent condition. I would really appreciate any information that you can give me about it. I used the coke can for scale.

It looks like a woman's handbag or tote.  What's inside?  Is it lined? Any labels?

Perhaps a knitting basket. The yarn comes out through the sides while the top shuts to keep the balls from bouncing out.  We would line those baskets with a cotton material so the yarn wouldn't snag.

Perhaps a " Pampered Pooch " carrier. !?!?

It is not lined, it's tag free and the strangest thing is that the top only opens about 6 inches.

I was leaning towards that too but it's not lined.

The top only opens about 6 inches so it would be very difficult to get a dog to fit through.
