Haitian Artist Jene Rene Jerome Pottery

Hi, need help on this rare pottery vase from the renown Haitian Artist Jene Rene Jerome (1942- 1991) Haitian painter, sculptor, ceramist, and 1985 gallery owner of Les Ateliers. My research disclosed He was world known for his beautiful paintings but unable to find any info on his sculptors or pottery work.

Any info on this Pottery vase... and how to value works on artist who are more known for "paintings" but ( no comps) not on rare pieces? I have been researching for weeks and appreciate any help? Thank you

Re: Haitian Artist Jene Rene Jerome Pottery

Yes, I been contemplating emailing the gallery, but it is an unsecure website.  Not many updated detailed articles or sites on Jerome, but found small info from many different resources but did come across this 2015 event-

https://www.manmanpemba.com/events/expo-objets-dartiste-ceramique-bois-et-gravure-sur-bois-les-ateli...

Which states Jerome's ceramic exhibit.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

The photo of the mark is not clear.  I can make out "Jerome" but not the other letters.  But I think I see one or two "L's.  What are the other letters? Or post a clear photo please.

I can't really help, because I've never seen anything except his paintings, but when you search if you use this spelling of his name you will get better results:    Jean-René Jérôme

Like Rita, I would like to see a good, clear, close-up photo of the mark, though.

So there'sno reason to think that Jean-René Jérôme did this piece himself.  I can't find any evidence that he worked in ceramics at all.  I think a lot more is needed to attribute this to him.

From the LES ATELIERS JEROME website:

"About

Established in Haiti since July 1985 by the renowned artist Jean-René Jérôme and Mireille Pérodin Jérôme, member of the AICA Caribbean, the Ateliers Jérôme claim a double status: art gallery and space for cultural activities. 36 years of experience and the application of a policy of rigor and accuracy of choice have made this gallery a reference. A practice of cooperation with public and private Haitian and International cultural organizations and institutions reinforce the credibility of this enterprise that has become an institution. Les Ateliers Jérôme is pleased to participate through this site to your project of acquisition of works and art objects by offering you a set carefully selected among the sure values of Haitian art as well as the rising values."

Re: Haitian Artist Jene Rene Jerome Pottery

Yes, that is the dilemma. He did pottery work in the early years of his career but when his paintings became important works, there is no mention or examples of his pottery in any research. The only thing that may suggest that this is an original piece from him, is that the image on the vase is very similar to one from a later oil painting.

Thank you for responding to my posting. Appreciate any help.

Can you cite the source of this information?  I just spent a long time looking and I found no reference to this from any reliable source.

If he did work with clay in his early years, is there evidence he returned to it towards the end of his life, when this business was established (just six years before his death)?  Or do you think this is a piece from those early years that he finally decided to sell?

Why can't it be piece done by one of the many other artists Les Ateliers Jerome represents?

Have you thought about contacting Les Ateliers Jerome to ask about the piece?   I'm sure they're familiar with the work of all the various artists they represent.

Never mind that sentence.  It would not be so marked were it made before 1985.   A duh!  moment on my part and I ran out of editing time.

From the linked site.

Jean-René Jérôme belongs to the School of Beauty, a painter of various artistic studies (drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, dance, theater, and voice).

There are two direct email addresses in your last link, could you not try those? It does seem the most obvious solution.
