Cool piece! Looks like a kitchen cabinet or work station, but some measurements would help, or something we can relate to like a coke can, etc? Does the center stay put? (Looks like it) Any stamps or metal plate stating a company, etc. I think you should do well with this!

The item is 35 .5 t x 37 " w no mark , center will not lift . Spring is automatic close . made of knotty pine .

That is cool.
It does look like a tub or pan sat in that hole.
Maybe a brass fixture was installed on that 5x5" (or so) square on top of the hole.
If this was about to be pitched at one point of time the brass could have been removed for scrap.
I wonder if those hinges are the sane age as the wood?
I like the idea of boat furniture.

I think it's a sewing station. A machine was probably in the hole that flipped up.

I just wanted to add that if you have ever spent time on a tiny sailboat (10-12 feet), this size is what you get for your stuff. And the spring hinges keep the doors *with the holes for handles) snug when you encounter rough seas... in the pond.
