Can anyone tell me more about this piece?

From what I have researched, it appears to be a chamber candle stick holder, but I have no idea of age etc. Also, a regular sized candle doesn't fit properly... there is no spike to hold it in... is this normal... were the candles a different size back in the day?

It's probably not very old.  The phillips head screw is a give away.  It was likely imported from India.

What is a "regular size" candle?  Candles come in various sizes whether back in the day or now.
