Old Roman Coin? Help Identify

I'm a jewelry seller and don't know much about coins. This is set in an old stick pin. I'm not even sure if it is a coin. The coin is only 1/2" in diameter.20230220_092536.jpg

Re: Old Roman Coin? Help Identify

Thanks for your reply but this has been in my family since about 1850 so how "modern" do you think it is?

Re: Old Roman Coin? Help Identify

People have been copying ancient coin types for jewelry since the 18th century. It was the era of the Grand Tour, when the educated gentleman was expected to travel to the ancient lands around the Mediterranean, and find souvenirs to mark the trip. So it could have been made in Italy or Greece in the mid 1800's.
