As most of you world coin collectors know, the history of the Netherlands is super complex and complicated.  Heron will offer a 'short version' for Nijmegen and Gelderland.

1678 - European Peace Treaty signed at Nijmegen.

County Gelderland:

11th Century - formed around Castels near Roermond and Geldern.

13th Century - Gelderland acquired Imperial City of Nijmegen.

1339 - Countship of Gelderland promoted to Duchy by Holy Rom Emperor Louis IV

1579 - Area joined Union of Utrecht in revolt against Philip II of Spain.

1672 - Gelderland occupied by Louis XIV of France.

1713 - To Prussia.

1795 - Part of Batavian Republic.

1806 - Part of Louie Bonaparte's Kingdom of Holland.

1815 - Part of New Kingdom of Netherlands.  And it remains so in 2017!...

Some Notes:

This nice 'silver' coin is also known as a Ruiterschelling [rider shilling].

Nijmegen apparently is considered to be the oldest city in den Nederlanden. First to be recognized as such in Roman times.

Gelderland is adjacent to Germania in Rhein, Waal, and Meuse River area with current border close to Bocholt Germania.
