there is an old item in the shopping cart that is apparently no longer available. But I cannot remove it or go to check out to purchase the to the two items.

I found several similar threads without much as far as helpful replies.
If the items truly cannot be deleted from within the cart the only interesting workaround I found was this. Perhaps worth a try.
"If you hover your mouse over the shopping cart icon on the main screen, any items in your cart will appear in the drop down list below it. Click the little rubbish bin icon next to the ones you don't want. Job done. "
If it doesnt help let us know and we can see if something else can be tried.

Is the unavailable item from the same seller that you are still trying to purchase other items from? If not, there should be a "pay only this seller" link.
Try using another browser or another device to see if that allows you to either delete the unavailable item or save it for later. If you use the eBay app, try swiping left to delete or swipe right to save for later. Be sure your "Saved for Later" list has less than one hundred items or you will not be able to save any additional items.
The cart is only necessary if you need to check out multiple items in one transaction; you should still be able to purchase individual items without using the cart at all.
If you are still unable to remove the unavailable item or check out while that item is in the cart, as a workaround to buy multiple items from the same seller, sign in to ebay.ca instead of ebay.com. Each site has its own cart or basket, which operates independently. Try checking out using the cart on ebay.ca.

The Cart was never meant to be used instead of the Watch list for items you are not sure you want to buy. It's main purpose is to allow buyers to pay for multiple items from one or more sellers at a time.
As eburtonlab wrote, you can buy any item directly from its listing page. If you want to buy a couple of a seller's items you can commit to buy them, and they will show up in a box at the top of your Purchase history along with a Request total from the seller button, if the seller mentions combining shipping.
FYI, The shopping cart can only be used with Fixed price items. It will not work with Auctions that are currently running or for items you have made offers on, until the auction ends and you win, or the seller accepts an offer, at which point they become fixed price items and you can add them to the Cart to pay.
