When Anticipated items like Game consoles, video games, album or direct to DVD/Blue ray movie releases... etc., are offered for pre-release sales they tend to sell out quickly, because the initial manufacturing run is limited to test the market.
The normal supply chain for those items are big box store orders first, then smaller chain or dedicated stores next, then the individual presale buyers, including those who just have to be the first on their block to get the item, last. While "scalpers" may get some as happens with event tickets. Physical items are usually rushed back into production if the demand is high enough and are often available at a lower price. Its just the way an open market system works.
