I just bought a phone and case totaling 256 and change but when I hit pay the total jumped to 277.77 WHY? IS TAXES THAT BAD

Your state's sales tax is now added to each sale.   By the way, you always were supposed to declare and pay sales tax on out of state purchases.  There is a place on your state income tax form for that.

As for bad, taxes have to be taken up at the ballot box.

It is because of the taxes you are charged by YOUR city and state which by the number you provided looks to be about 8.5% sales tax. I agree taxes are too high everywhere. The only way to combat that is to vote in ALL elections.
