So I'll be searching for, say, a 10m cable on eBay - lowest price first. A whole bunch of really cheap 10m cables appear, but in fact most of them are listings with "variations", and the the prices I'm seeing are actually for much shorter cables.
These stupid things are a total irritation and I don't see why eBay allow them? They don't lead to upselling. All they do is clutter up the search results and prevent people finding what they're looking for.
Is there ANY way to exclude these things from search results?

If you are looking for ways to remove listings with price variations from your search results, there are some ideas in this thread:
In particular, berserkerplanet came up with a script that can be saved in a bookmark such that when you encounter a search result page with many price variation listings, you can click on the bookmark to remove those listings from the page. A very handy trick.

The link given in the previous reply does help get rid of the multi-variation listings on the U.S. based site. Whether or not it works on the U.K. site is not known.

Price: lowest first will almost always return the multi variation listings first. Most of those are listed by sellers from Asia, though in the U.K. many are listed by "business seller registered in the U.K." who are actually located in Asia or drop ship from there, so you cannot use a U.K. only filter. You can check their feedback profile to see if there are comments about items coming from Asia or very slow shipping.
You can try doing an Advance Search using one of the exact word filters, so only 10m cables are displayed. If you have an idea of the retail price of an item is you can use the price filter in the left column to set a minimum price to start your search with 30 or 40% off at first.

I believe the following code fragment is designed to allow berserkerplanet's script to work on multiple country sites.
(/^https?:\/\/www\.ebay\.(com|ca|co\.uk|com\.au|in|de|at|fr| it|nl|es|ch|ie|ph|pl|be|com\.hk|com\.my|com\.sg)
It seems to work for me on ebay.co.uk, though I have not tested it extensively.

Thank you, eburtonlab, but that didn't work for me. I click the bookmark and nothing happens, sadly.

If you are looking at a search result page with many price variation listings, when you click on the bookmark, you should see the variation listings removed and replaced with a text string.
Here is a good search to test the bookmark:
