Hello and question about NBS

Hello again. I just became a member of the NBS. I have the Feb 2006 supplement and bulletin but I haven't been able to find anywhere a list of what the categories for awards are this year. When and how do they come out. Being a newbie, I have no intention of entering or anything I'm just interested. I've seen the award list for the California Button Society meeting on the internet but nothing for the NBS.

Hello and question about NBS

The NBS website doesn't have the awards list for some reason, probably because no one really wants to do the work to put the long list on there. The awards list is published annually, well before the national convention, in the December Bulletin. You'd want the Dec. 2005 issue. You can order this from Gil Biggie. Her address shows as the west coast person to contact for back issues inside the back cover of the Bulletin you received. Just send along a stamped, self addressed envelope large enough for a Bulletin to fit and if she has that issue, she'll send it to you. Or contact me directly and I'll see how I can help to get you the awards list. Click on my eBay name, go to my feedback file, on the right side click "contact member", be sure to UNCHECK the place on your message that says "hide my address" so I can reply directly to you. P.S. I'm the Awards Chair for Calif. State Button Society, will you be competing at our State show this year? -Carol C-

Hello and question about NBS

I live in Virginia but plan to retire to California, where I'm originally from. I'm not at the stage where I could compete anywhere yet, though. My very first tray I'm trying to fill is assorted backmarks. I have bought several paperweight buttons as well. I've been a paperweight collector for a long time. How would you tell a beginner to start out? I don't want to buy several pounds of buttons and sort through without knowing what I am doing - so I thought sticking to a theme or material might be good. Otherwise, I've been buying what seems pretty and drooling at the guitarpartsforyou buttons that I can't afford! A kind seller said there was a local group right in my neck of the woods. I think I will check that out. I need experienced collectors to look at some of my buttons and tell me what they are actually made of! Is there a society that covers Virginia? I see one for the Northeast and one from North Carolina, but nothing for the mid-Atlantic. Best regards, Bea

Hello and question about NBS

Bea: If you were informed that there is a local group in Virginia, that might be the only one. Not every state has a state society but many have local clubs. It is very useful to join a local club and attend their meetings. You will learn more from other collectors than any book. It is a great idea to specialize your collecting rather than to do what so many of us did when we started, which is buy every button we could get our hands on. In a very short period of time, most collectors find they are climbing up the collecting ladder and really want the finer buttons. I would concentrate on finding buttons where buttons are a specialty, like right here on eBay. We have a fantastic button category at our disposal as you know. And attendance at regional, state and national button shows is really fun and a great way to find buttons at competitive prices. When you get to California there are many button clubs you can join out here. We have the most button collectors of any state and there are often small regional button shows plus our State show in April this year (last weekend) in San Jose, CA. There's also the Western Region Button Assn. (WRBA) which holds a pretty large show in Reno, NV each October. People love this show and it brings collectors and sellers in from the "western region" of the US, Alaska, Canada and Hawaii. We see folks at this show who cannot attend other larger shows including most National shows, so it's a good one to attend in this part of the country. I hope you'll be in the Los Angeles area, then you can join our club. I'm President and we have a small but fun group. -Carol C-

Hello and question about NBS

Wow, I am so impressed, I had no idea. My father was a button collector and when he died we divided the buttons by each person taking five buttons at a time. I really did not think beyond that. I have had an antique business for many years and have now retired. Over those years I bought buttons and put them in a printer type case, a few people over the years have looked though and bought them at different times. I just guessed at prices. Maybe this will be my retirement hobby along with my garden. I am on my way to Branson for the afternoon, but I promise I will return. nigel

Hello and question about NBS

Nigel: You could have some good buttons because most men who collect usually add some uniform buttons and those are the types with typically higher value than many pretty buttons. If you should need help identifying any of the uniform buttons, feel free to use our photo album here. I have to approve each image but I do check back to do that from time to time. -Carol C-
