SATNROSE’S BOOK QUIZ

SATNROSE’S BOOK QUIZ

2. What is the most valuable printed book?

Answer in invisible ink: 2. Was The Gutenberg Bible; now it is the Caxton Canterbury Tales

Note: I think a complete Gutenberg would beat the Canterbury if offered up to auction. However, the Caxton Canterbury is currently the most expensive printed book ever to change hands. 13 million? I forget.....

Re: SATNROSE’S BOOK QUIZ

636. Congratulations to ksmrkt--that's the one I had. There really was no substantial amount of foreign language printing anywhere in the colonies until the German press in Pennsylvania started producing.

In 1739 a longer-lived German-language paper, the Hoch Deutsch Pennsylvanischer Geschicht Schreiber, started in Germantown.

Re: SATNROSE’S BOOK QUIZ

I should have said 1638 or 1639--date not specifically determined.

Adding another question from the same era:

638. When was the first book printed in what is now the United States that bore the name of its printer?

Re: SATNROSE’S BOOK QUIZ

637. From Winthrop's Journal:

"The first thing which was printed was the freeman's Oath; the next was an almanack made for New England by Mr. William Pierce, Mariner; the next was the Psalms newly turned into metre."

The press was known to be in operation in late September or early October 1638; the almanac, for 1639, would have been printed in 1638 or 1639.

638. Another almanac, "An Almanack for the Year of our Lord 1647," had the imprint:

Cambridge
Printed by Matthew Day
And to be sold by Hez. Usher at Boston
1647

It was the first book printed in Massachusetts to carry a printer's name.

No. 639. This poet, known for their generosity, was well-known in society - a member of a famous club - and concerned actively with matters of copyright. Who was it?
